RECAP: Sea Dogs eliminated with game four loss to Wildcats
SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The Saint John Sea Dogs pushed back with three goals in the final 10 minutes but were unable to stave off elimination against the Moncton Wildcats on Wednesday night at TD Station.
The Cats jumped out to an early lead when Alex Mercier beat Arseni Radkov along the ice at 2:03. Gavin Cornforth scored his sixth of the series at 15:42 to make it 2-0 before the end of the first. With two seconds remaining in the period, Zach Morin took exception to a two-handed slash by Teddy Mutryn and went after the Wildcats forward at center ice, resulting in three penalties.
To open the second, Preston Lounsbury scored at 2:37 on his own rebound. At 15:53, Mutryn scored shorthanded, followed by Gabe Smith on the man advantage with 23 seconds left in the period as Moncton led 5-0 after two.
Lounsbury scored his second of the night at 2:52 of the third, tipping in Matthew Virgilio’s shot from the point. At 7:50, Kuzma Voronin broke in alone and beat Radkov blocker side to make it 7-0.
The Dogs didn’t go away quietly. Angelo Fullerton one-timed a pass from Alexis Joseph at 9:51 on the man advantage to end Rudy Guimond’s shutout bid. A minute later, Morin snapped one far side after Joseph won a battle along the boards to get him the puck. With just over a minute to play, Olivier Groulx ripped one home on a feed from Cameron Chartrand to close the game at 7-3.
