RECAP: Sea Dogs drop third-straight despite late surge in Rimouski
RIMOUSKI, QC – The Saint John Sea Dogs finished their latest Quebec road trip with a third-straight loss, 4-3 to the Rimousk Oceanic on Saturday.
Sea Dogs captain Eriks Mateiko notched a goal and an assist, while Zach Morin recorded a pair of helpers. Olivier Groulx and Ben Cross were the other goal scorers for Saint John.
Rimouski goals came from Olivier Theberge, Mael St-Denis, Dominic Pilote, and Jacob Mathieu.
GAME SUMMARY
Just 44 seconds into the game, Zach Morin set up Eriks Mateiko who cut to the middle of the ice and fired a shot past Samuel St-Hilaire’s glove putting the Sea Dogs up 1-0.
With just under five minutes left in the second period, former Sea Dog Pavel Simek fed Olivier Theberge, who buried a wrist shot far side to tie the game. A little over a minute later, Mael St-Denis picked up Theberge’s rebound and slipped it past Justin Robinson, giving Rimouski a 2-1 lead.
Four minutes into the third, St-Denis broke into the Sea Dog’ zone and dropped the puck to Dominic Pilote, who capitalized with a wrist shot. Just 41 seconds later, Mathieu Cataford sent a pass from behind the net to Alexandre Blais, who set up Jacob Mathieu to extend Rimouski’s lead to 4-1.
At the 13:12 mark, Olivier Groulx collected a bouncing puck as he crossed the blueline, skated in, and sniped one over St-Hilaire’s shoulder. Later, Olivier Duhamel connected with Mateiko at the Océanic blueline, whose shot was tipped in by Ben Cross to pull the Sea Dogs within one. Despite the late push their comeback fell short, ending the night with a 4-3 final score.
