RECAP: Sea Dogs drop back-to-back games in Cape Breton
SYDNEY, NS – In a near mirror image of Saturday night’s game, the Saint John Sea Dogs fell to the Cape Breton Eagles once again on Sunday afternoon at Centre 200. This time, the Eagles secured a 6-2 victory following their 6-3 win the night before.
Cape Breton’s six different goal scorers were Cole Burbidge, Luke Patterson, Xavier Daigle, Romain Litalien, Brayden Schmitt, and Cam Squires. The Sea Dogs got goals from Ben Cross and Mitchell Wagner.
GAME SUMMARY
After strong saves at both ends, Cole Burbridge opened the scoring for the Eagles at 16:58 in the first, finishing a pass from behind the net by Alexis Toussaint. With just 10 seconds left in the period, Xavier Daigle flipped the puck out front to Luke Patterson, who whacked it in to make it 2-0.
At 15:17 into the second, Zach Morin streaked in alone, rang a shot off the post, and left a loose puck sitting in the crease. Ben Cross jumped in and poked it past Alexis Cournoyer to bring the Sea Dogs within one.
Just 26 seconds into the final frame, a faceoff win led to Xavier Daigle stepping in and ripping a shot blocker-side past Eric Young for the game-winning goal. A couple of minutes later, Romain Litalien shoveled home Joseph Henneberry’s rebound on the power play. At 4:49, Brayden Schmitt walked in unchallenged and deked out Young for an easy goal, extending the Eagles lead to 5-1.
The Sea Dogs showed some life in the third when a mad scramble in front of the Eagles’ net allowed Mitchell Wagner to pot his second goal of the season. Cam Squires sealed the game’s fate at 18:32, scoring on an empty net to finalize the 6-2 win for Cape Breton.
