RECAP: Sea Dogs come up short against high-powered Mooseheads
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs took on the Halifax Mooseheads for the first time this season on Friday night at TD Station, but failed to capture a win, falling 4-2 to the top-ranked team in the CHL. The loss brings the Sea Dogs record to 5-10-1-2.
The game began with an immediate penalty for the Sea Dogs as Noah Reinhart was called for holding just 28 seconds in. Making the most of the powerplay, Mooseheads forward Jordan Dumais scored at 1:11. Halifax further extended their lead with a goal from Brody Fournier at 13:01. The first period concluded with the Mooseheads leading 2-0, outshooting the Sea Dogs 14-4.
Mathieu Cataford scored at 10:55 into the second to make it 3-0 for the visitors. The Sea Dogs finally broke the seal at 18:48 when Nate Tivey, assisted by Peter Reynolds and Eriks Mateiko, netted his third goal of the season. The period ended with Halifax leading 3-1 and shots on goal 23-13 in their favor.
Dumais struck again for the Mooseheads 11:59 into the third period, scoring his second of the game and bringing the score to 4-1. With just 8.2 seconds remaining, Pavel Simek, assisted by Nicolas Bilodeau and Reynolds, buried the Sea Dogs’ second goal of the night. Despite their efforts, the Sea Dogs couldn’t close the gap any further. The game ended in a 4-2 victory for the Mooseheads. Final shots on goal favored Halifax 29-25.
