RECAP: Peddle’s hat trick leads Sea Dogs to road win
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Tyler Peddle lit up the scoreboard Friday night for the Saint John Sea Dogs with three goals in return from NHL training camp with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Charles-Édward Gravel also put on a show with 45 stops in net, securing the win against the Charlottetown Islanders.
Elliot Dubé, Nate Tivey, and William Yared scored the other three goals for the Sea Dogs as they improved their record to 1-2-0-0. Tivey also put together a four-point performance.
Islanders goals came from Matthew Butler and Alexis Michaud.
GAME SUMMARY
The night kicked off five minutes into the first period on the powerplay when Nate Tivey slid one to Tyler Peddle who scored on a perfectly placed one-timer that beat Nicolas Ruccia high on the glove side. Not even a minute later, William Yared found Elliot Dube with a nifty little spin-o-rama pass and he put a wrist shot off the far post and in to make it 2-0 for the Sea Dogs.
After the Sea Dogs killed off a two-minute holding penalty, they quickly found themselves back on the board. A sloppy turnover by the Islanders to Tivey allowed the veteran defenceman to walk in alone and put one past Ruccia to go up 3-0 at the 16:15 mark. This goal would be the eventual game-winner.
12 minutes into the second period, Peddle found the back of the net again for his second of the game in similar fashion after a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Nicolas Bilodeau and Tivey on the powerplay to extend the lead to 4-0. The Dogs didn’t let up as the second period came to a close. The rookie, Yared, with only three seconds left found a loose puck in tight for an easy put-back goal making it 5-0 after 40 minutes.
The Islanders would eventually get on the scoreboard when Matthew Butler jammed one past Gravel at the 7:47 mark in the third period. At 12:34 it was Peddle to Tivey and back to Peddle for his third one-timer of the night to complete his hat trick, marking his presence felt in his season debut.
The Islanders refused to go away quietly as Alexis Michaud scored on the powerplay at the 15:16 mark. Despite the Islanders outshooting the Sea Dogs 24-7 in the third period, Gravel shut the door to bring home the 6-2 win for the Dogs.
