RECAP: Islanders third period outburst sinks Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN – In a spirited third encounter of the month, the Saint John Sea Dogs couldn’t hold off the Charlottetown Islanders third period charge, dropping a 6-3 decision Wednesday night at TD Station.
The Islanders opened the scoring with William Shields hitting the twine at 7:32. The Islanders doubled their lead at 8:56 with a short-handed goal by Giovanni Morneau. Tyler Peddle cut the deficit to one when he buried his first goal as a Sea Dog at 9:31, assisted by Nate Tivey. Anthony Flanagan then scored for the Islanders at 17:01, ending the first period with the Sea Dogs trailing 3-1 but leading in shots 15-10.
The Sea Dogs showed resilience with Matteo Mann’s goal at 12:05 into the second, followed swiftly by Brody Fournier’s equalizer at 13:14, thanks to a set-up from Nicolas Bilodeau. The second period ended with the teams locked at three and the Sea Dogs leading in shots, 28-23.
An early penalty affected the Sea Dogs as Drew Elliott served a tripping minor at 9:44. Shields capitalized with a powerplay goal and his second of the game to regain the lead. Simon Hughes extended the Islanders advantage to 5-3 at 13:17. The Islanders sealed the win with a goal by Alexis Michaud on an empty Sea Dogs net at 19:29. The game concluded with a 6-3 victory for the Islanders, with the Sea Dogs putting up 40 shots to the Islanders 35. This defeat puts the Sea Dogs record at 15-21-3-3.
The Sea Dogs look to bounce back in their next game, which marks the first matchup of the year against the Shawinigan Cataractes and Vince Élie’s return to the TD Station, scheduled for Thursday night at 7pm.
