RECAP: Elie leads Sea Dogs to overtime win over Chicoutimi
CHICOUTIMI, QC – The Saint John Sea Dogs rebounded from their loss last night with a thrilling 3-2 overtime triumph against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Friday night. This win elevates their record to 7-12-1-2.
Vince Élie set the tone early for the Sea Dogs, scoring unassisted at 2:15 in the first period. Despite a roughing penalty against Sam-Luca Thifault late in the first, the Sea Dogs effectively killed the penalty, keeping their lead. The period ended with the Sea Dogs up 1-0.
The Saguenéens fought back with Émile Guité equalizing the score just two minutes into the second period. Alexis Morin then put Chicoutimi ahead with a powerplay goal at 5:48. Danny Akkouche received a holding penalty at 19:00, leaving them a man down going into the third. The period ended 2-1 in favor of Chicoutimi, who also led in shots, 24-17.
The Sea Dogs successfully killed off the remaining penalty while shorthanded to start the third. Mathis Gauthier with his second of the year tied the game at 17:51, assisted by Pavel Simek and Nico Laforge. The first 60 minutes ended with the teams deadlocked at two, forcing overtime.
Élie, with a perfectly placed one-timer, scored the game-winning goal 37 seconds into overtime on the powerplay, assisted by Joseph Ianniello and Peter Reynolds. His second of the night secured a well-earned victory for the Sea Dogs. Goaltender Justin Robinson was pivotal in the win, earning the second star of the game with 29 saves.
The Saint John Sea Dogs look to carry their momentum onward as they face the Rimouski Océanic on Sunday at 4pm in the final game of their Quebec road trip. Their next home game is set for Saturday, November 25th, against the Western Conference leading Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
