GAME RECAP: Sea Dogs comeback falls short in shootout loss to Wildcats

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – In a nail-biting home opener at TD Station, the Saint John Sea Dogs came from behind to force overtime but ultimately fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Moncton Wildcats on Friday night.

Wildcats defenceman Shayne Gould struck first just 57 seconds into the game, but Olivier Lemieux quickly responded for Saint John at 1:51. Niko Tournas then beat Samuel Meloche to put the Cats ahead 2-1 again after just 41 seconds. The Dogs mounted pressure for the remainder of the period, outshooting Moncton 12-6 but still trailed by one after 20 minutes of play.

At 10:54 of the second, Oliver Ozogany took a double-minor for high-sticking giving Moncton their first power play of the game, but the Sea Dogs killed it off. After 40 minutes, Moncton still led 2-1 but trailed 18-14 in shots.

Five minutes into the third, Dylan Rozzi tucked one past Jacoby Weiner on a slick feed from Jamie Glance to tie the game 2-2. On the man advantage, Tournas scored his second of the night at 13:29. The Sea Dogs pulled Meloche at 18:05 for the extra attacker, and Alexis Joseph delivered, tying it 3-3 on a pass from Matyas Cancik. Saint John led 27-23 in shots after regulation.

Saint John dominated overtime, outshooting the Wildcats 8-2, but couldn’t find the winner. The game went to a shootout, where Moncton took the 4-3 victory.
