After the departure of their leader and team captain Guy Lafleur, Montréal Canadien’s first choice in 1971, the Remparts won the President’s Cup three more times (1972-1973, 1973-1974 and 1975-1976.  Each championship team was led by a different coach:  Orval Tessier, Marc picard, then Ronald Racette.<\/span><\/p>\n

1969 was an important year, highlighted by many events that are still talked about by older fans.
 
Before the great Jean Béliveau led the Montreal Canadiens to their 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup championship, he earned the nickname ‘’le Gros Bill’’ while playing for the Québec Citadelles of the Provincial Junior A League.
 
In 1969, the Provincial Junior A League ended its activities. At the end of the 1968-69 season, the Junior Aces Director of Operations, Mr. Paul Dumont, had been advised by the General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers that his organization intended to sell the junior team before the beginning of following season. As such, Junior A hockey was threatened to disappear from the Québec area. This was an unacceptable perspective for Mr. Dumont who had been in charge of this junior team for many years.
 
In order to avoid this situation, he decided to talk to his good friend, Dr. Clément Massicotte. Soon after, Marius Fortier, Jean-Marc Bruneau and 16 other associates accepted to be part of the great adventure.  With a commitment of $1,000. each, they established the COLIBEC Society which saw Jean-Marc Bruneau become its first president.
 
The four initial promoters now had the mandate to negotiate with Bill Putman of the Flyers. The purchasing offer of the Junior Aces and all its assets was for one dollar ($1.), accompanied by a guarantee that the buyers losses, should they rose in the first year of the purchase, would be covered by the former owners up to a maximum amount of  $10,000. Mr. Putman accepted this proposition without further negotiation and also promised to help the new owners signing players.
 
The team strategy was very simple:  operate the club in a professional manner, no matter what the costs were. In order to build a good franchise, they had to change the team’s image. This is where as a result of contest, the name REMPARTS was suggested. Nonetheless, the biggest piece of the puzzle was the hiring of Maurice Filion as the team General Manager and Head Coach. Well-known for his prior success with the Drummondville Rangers, Fillion was the right man for the task. With the final addition of Guy Lafleur, the fabulous adventure of the Remparts was now underway, and so too was the new era of junior hockey in Quebec.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

A HISTORY, A TRADITION \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

No other words can better describe the revival of the Qu\u00e9bec Remparts. In 1997, after a 12-year hiatus, magic returned to the Qu\u00e9bec Major Junior Hockey League, with the team bringing a fresh scent of enthusiasm and optimism to junior hockey in Qu\u00e9bec.\u00a0 The team ownership always prided themselves in offering a top-quality product to the fans, sponsors and players.\u00a0 They have also created a brand equivalent to that of any professional team in North America.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The rebirth of the Qu\u00e9bec Remparts came when Michel Cadrin, Patrick Roy and Jacques Tanguay saved a regional team from disaster. Everyone applauded when the three philanthropists and diehard hockey fans purchased the faltering Beauport Harfangs in the middle of the 1996-97 season. Although the Harfangs\u2019 arrival marked the return of junior hockey to Qu\u00e9bec City in 1990-91, its organization never enjoyed much success.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fuelled by sheer passion and determination, the new owners took on an enormous challenge. Established businessmen Michel Cadrin and Jacques Tanguay were already well known in the area as pro-active in the regional economy and committed to the local community. Patrick Roy, without a doubt the NHL\u2019s best goaltender for nearly twenty years, devoted himself to building a regional team characterized by both a prestigious past and a tradition of excellence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On February 26, 2011, the owners of the Remparts decide to take on a new partner, and Andr\u00e9 Desmarais becomes a member of the group.\u00a0 Very well-known in the business world, Mr. Desmarais, who heads the multinational Power Corporation, shares the same vision and values as Cadrin, Tanguay and Roy.\u00a0 Ready to become involved with the local Qu\u00e9bec community and understanding the philosophy of the Remparts group, he decided to join the team\u2019s present owners.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On November 27, 2014, a new page of the history of the second generation of the Remparts is turned, as the team is sold to Sports and Entertainment Group of Quebecor Media Inc., which will allow them to play, starting in September 2015, in the brand-new Centre Videotron.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Qu\u00e9bec Remparts\u2019 market has a potential client base of over half a million.\u00a0 The Greater Qu\u00e9bec region\u2019s 800,000 people make up over 9% of the province\u2019s population.\u00a0 Already an institution, the Remparts quickly succeeded in developing a sense of belonging and pride in the region it represents.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the start of this adventure in 1997, the owners opted to rejuvenate the team\u2019s logo, incorporating a stylized tower with a heraldic influence, making reference to the old city walls.\u00a0\u00a0 To recall the Remparts\u2019 dynasty, the organization unveiled a new logo in 2004, a stylized \u201cR\u201d – made popular in the 1970s – encircled by the words \u201cRemparts de Qu\u00e9bec.\u201d\u00a0 This logo bears witness to the organization\u2019s strong ties to the City of Qu\u00e9bec – the only walled city in North America – and to its many fans.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Remparts will continue using the same colors; beige, black and red throughout the 2012-2013 season. At the beginning of the 2013-2014 season, the fans were introduced to the new official colors, whereas white and black and red are predominant. The logo practically remains the same while the color white replaces the beige.<\/p>\n

In 1969, the Provincial Junior A League ended its activities.\u00a0 At the end of the 1968-69 season, the Junior Aces Diector of Operations, Mr. Paul Dumont, had been advised by the General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers that his organization intended to sell the junior team before the beginning of following season.\u00a0 As such, Junior A hockey was threatened to disappear from the Qu\u00e9bec area. This was an unacceptable perspective for Mr. Dumont who had been in charge of this junior team for many years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In order to avoid this situation, he decided to talk to his good friend, Dr. Cl\u00e9ment Massicotte. Soon after, Marius Fortier, Jean-Marc Bruneau and 16 other associates accepted to be part of the great adventure.\u00a0 With a commitment of $1,000. each, they established the COLIBEC Society which saw Jean-Marc Bruneau become its first president.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The four initial promoters now had the mandate to negotiate with Bill Putman of the Flyers.\u00a0 The purchasing offer of the Junior Aces and all its assets was for one dollar ($1.), accompanied by a guarantee that the buyers losses, should they rose in the first year of the purchase, would be covered by the former owners up to a maximum amount of $10,000.\u00a0 Mr. Putman accepted this proposition without further negotiation and also promised to help the new owners signing players.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The team strategy was very simple:\u00a0 operate the club in a professional manner, no matter what the costs were. In order to build a good franchise, they had to change the team\u2019s image. This is where as a result of contest, the name REMPARTS was suggested. Nonetheless, the biggest piece of the puzzle was the hiring of Maurice Filion as the team General Manager and Head Coach. Well-known for his prior success with the Drummondville Rangers, Fillion was the right man for the task. With the final addition of Guy Lafleur, the fabulous adventure of the Remparts was now underway, and so too was the new era of junior hockey in Quebec.<\/p>\n

1969-70:\u00a0 the beginning of the new Remparts<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Remparts played their first game at the Colis\u00e9e against the Sorel Eperviers, on October 18, 1969 in front of more than 4,000 enthusiastic fans.\u00a0 The team, coached by Maurice Filion, won 10-5 after an incredible performance from Guy Lafleur.\u00a0 The number 4 ended the game with four goals and one assist.\u00a0 Hockey fans soon discovered an incredibly talented player and nicknamed him \u00able D\u00e9mon blond\u00a0\u00bb of the Qu\u00e9bec Major Junior Hockey League.\u00a0 After keeping a record of 37 wins, 18 losses and one tie, the Qu\u00e9bec Remparts ended their first season on top of the QMJHL.\u00a0 Soon after, the Remparts captured the Presidents Cup after winning the playoffs against Drummondville, Sorel and Saint-J\u00e9r\u00f4me.\u00a0 As the top scorer of the playoffs, Guy Lafleur scored 25 goals for 43 points in 15 games and helped the team gain berth in the Memorial Cup Tournament.\u00a0 In other words, a very satisfying first season for the Remparts.<\/p>\n

1970-71:\u00a0 the champions!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the first season of the Qu\u00e9bec Remparts had been somewhat of a fairytale, there are few words to describe the second.\u00a0 The players and the team personnel had only one goal: avenge their loss at the Memorial Cup and prove they were the best team in the country.\u00a0 Armed with a lot of determination, the Remparts finished their season for a second year in a row with a 32-points lead over of the most serious rival, the Shawinigan Bruins. The Remparts 54 wins, 7 losses, 1 tie, for 109 points earned them the first overall spot in the standing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Remparts got their pass for the Memorial cup tournament for a second year in a row after winning the President\u2019s cup. Maurice Fillion then coached his team to the final by beating the Saguenay-Lac St-Jean Champions, the Ottawa District champions and the Maritime champions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the final of the Memorial Cup, the Remparts would face the St. Catharines Black Hawks, Champions of the Ontario Hockey League.\u00a0 An epic challenge between two great teams, enhanced by the confrontation of Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne, two incredibly talented players with whom the Montreal Canadiens would soon have to decide which one to make their 1st<\/sup> choice at the next draft. After winning the first game on the opponent\u2019s home ice, 4-2, the Remparts lost the second game, 8-3.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Remparts then took the series lead 3-1, after a 3-1 and 6-1 win over St. Catharines. The fourth game even ended in a major brawl forcing the Black Hawks to be escorted to get back to their bus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In order to avoid the same kind of situation, the 5th<\/sup> game was presented at the Maple Leaf Garden in Toronto in front of hostile hockey fans. The Remparts lost the fifth game of the series, 6-3.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the end of the game, the Black Hawks refused to go back to Qu\u00e9bec to finish the series. A compromise was never reached which prompted the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) to declare the Remparts Memorial Cup champions, the series now reduced to a best of five games.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In order to shake off the bitter taste of the conquest and to celebrate in an honourable manner, the Remparts challenged the Edmonton Oil Kings, the WHL champions to a Best of three series. The Remparts won consecutive games 5-1 and 5-2 to earn the championship.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Remparts, the first winners representing Quebec City, could finally celebrate their victory with official ceremonies, a parade in the streets of downtown Qu\u00e9bec and the signing of the Qu\u00e9bec City Gold Book. The party lasted for 15 days amongst the 440,000 fans who came to the Colis\u00e9e throughout the 1970-71 season.<\/p>\n

1971 \u2026 after the Memorial Cup to the return<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After the departure of their leader and team captain, Guy Lafleur, Montreal Canadiens\u2019 1st<\/sup> choice in 1971, the Remparts won the President Cup on three other occasions (1972-73, 1973-74 and 1975-76).\u00a0 Those three championship teams were led by three different coaches:\u00a0 Orval Tessier, Marc Picard and Ronald Racette.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the Remparts disappeared from the Qu\u00e9bec Junior Hockey scene at the end of the 1984-85 season.\u00a0 At the beginning of the 1997-98 season, the Remparts came back to a new home at the Peps of Laval University.\u00a0\u00a0 In their first season, the \u00ab\u00a0Diables Rouges\u00a0\u00bb finished first amongst all teams and won the Jean-Rougeau Trophy with a 48-18-6 record, good for 98 points.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This achievement was repeated in 1998-99 by finishing 1st<\/sup> with 108 points.\u00a0 In 70 games, the Remparts kept an excellent record of 51-13-6.\u00a0 During the same season, they tied a League record for the longest undefeated streak with 27 games (22-0-5), record established by the Sorel Eperviers (26-0-1) in 1973-74.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 1999-00, the Remparts finished 3rd<\/sup> among the QMHJL teams when they got 96 points in 72 games.\u00a0 At the beginning of the 2000-01 season, many new faces joined the team and at the end of the season, the Remparts ranked 13th<\/sup> with 58 points.\u00a0 In 2001-02, the Remparts ended the season with a total of 71 points and ranked 10th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the end of 2002-03, the Remparts finished 4th<\/sup> in the overall standings with a total of 90 points in 72 games.\u00a0 For the 2nd<\/sup> time of their history, they participated as the host team to the Memorial Cup Tournament, held in Qu\u00e9bec City.\u00a0 The team lost all 3 games. Nonetheless, a new attendance record was set in Qu\u00e9bec when 84,675 fans attended the tournament.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In June 2003, the co-owner of the team, Patrick Roy, ended a prestigious goaltending hockey career in the NHL and joined the organization as the Vice-President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.\u00a0 The 2003-04 season opened with many fresh young faces and only five veteran players returning to the team.\u00a0 Contrary to all expectations, the young Remparts finished 12th<\/sup> in the standings with 66 points (28-32-7-3) and participated in the playoff series.\u00a0 The season ended with a loss in five games against the P.E.I. Rocket.\u00a0 During the same season, the Remparts also established a new attendance record since their return with a total of 207,661 spectators.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 2004-05 season began with a lot of optimism and even saw the Remparts compete with the top teams in the QMJHL overall standings.\u00a0 The team finished strong and captured the 4th<\/sup> overall position with a record of 38-22-5-5 for 86 points.\u00a0 In the 1st<\/sup> playoff series, they faced the Victoriaville Tigres and won in seven games.\u00a0 In the 2nd<\/sup> round, the Remparts played against the Chicoutimi Saguen\u00e9ens and lost in six games.\u00a0 For a second year in a row, a new attendance record was set when 242,187 people came to the regular season games, as well as a total of 85,000 in seven playoff games.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the 2005-06 season, 18 of the 23 players from the 2004-05 team were back in the line-up. After only five games, the team Vice-President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Patrick Roy, decided to take over the coaching job as the team posted only one win after 5 games.\u00a0 On September 30, 2005, he coached his first game, the home opener, against the St. John\u2019s Fog Devils and won 6-3.\u00a0 \u00a0During the season, the Remparts had two winning streaks of 14 and 13 wins, ranked 2nd<\/sup> in the QMJHL Standings, only one point behind the Moncton Wildcats, and 1st<\/sup> in the Western Division with a record of 52-16-1-1 and 106 points. Coach Patrick Roy finished with a record of 51-14-1-1, a stellar performance.\u00a0 In the playoffs, the Remparts won the first two playoff series in five games against Val-d\u2019Or and Shawinigan before getting their pass for the President Cup Finals by winning in seven games against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.\u00a0 In the finals, the Remparts lost in six games against Moncton.\u00a0 The final series was very tight as the four losses were by only one goal and three of them were in overtime.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the second time since their return, the Remparts participated in the Memorial Cup Tournament, held in Moncton. Playing as the host team and shooting 48 times, the Remparts lost their first game 3-2 against the Peterborough Petes.\u00a0 In the second game, the Remparts came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Vancouver Giants 6-3.\u00a0 In the third and last game of the round-robin tournament, les \u201cDiables Rouges\u2019\u2019 faced off with the Moncton Wildcats and beat them 4-3.\u00a0 This important victory gave the Remparts a bye to go directly to the finals.\u00a0 In the last game, the opponents, for a second time in five days, were the Moncton Wildcats. With the help of Alexander Radulov who scored two goals and got three assists for five points and goaltender Cedrick Desjardins, who faced 48 shots, the Remparts won the Memorial Cup with a 6-2 victory over the Wildcats.\u00a0 After a 35-year wait, the Remparts were finally bringing the Memorial Cup back to Qu\u00e9bec City.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 2006-07 season began in a festive mood. The Qu\u00e9bec Remparts celebrated their great history by hanging up to the rafters of Le Colis\u00e9e different banners of past team championships, as well as the banner for the 2006 Memorial Cup.\u00a0 Although the team lost important players on the roster such as Alexander Radulov (Nashville) and Marc-\u00c9douard Vlasic who, at his second training camp with the San Jose Sharks, graduated to the NHL, the Remparts were still considered one of the best teams in the League. A strong finish secured an overall record of 37 wins, 28 losses, 2 overtime losses and 3 shootout losses for a total of 79 points, good for 5th <\/sup>place in the East Division standings, and only 9 points from the 1st<\/sup> place team.\u00a0 In the first round of playoffs, the Remparts faced the Drummondville Voltigeurs and lost in six games.\u00a0 Throughout the season, the fans\u2019 support was great and the Remparts again set a new QMJHL and CHL attendance record by attracting the highest number of fans in one season with 365,620 people, an average of 10,446 fans per game.<\/p>\n

During the 2007-08 season, the Remparts were still among the best teams of the League.\u00a0 With a record of 38 wins, 28 losses, one overtime loss and three shootout losses for 80 points, the team finished 5th<\/sup> in their division.\u00a0 In the first round of playoffs, the Remparts played against the Chicoutimi Saguen\u00e9ens and in a very emotive series, the Remparts won 4-2 to advance to the second round, this time against the Gatineau Olympiques.\u00a0 The Remparts finally lost in five games, one win against four losses.\u00a0 For a second consecutive season, the Remparts set a new QMJHL and CHL attendance record with a total of 390,711 fans for an average of 11,163 per game, beating their previous record set in 2006-07.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Once again, the 2008-09 season has been one for the ages. The Remparts finished 1st<\/sup> in the Telus-East Division with 101 points. A strong record of 49 wins, 16 losses and 3 shootout losses was good enough to help the Remparts rank 4th<\/sup> in the overall standings.\u00a0 In the first round of playoffs, the Remparts easily defeated the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 4 games to 1. \u00a0In the second round, the squad had a terrible start losing their first two games at home against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Faced with adversity, Patrick Roy\u2019s team traveled to Sydney hoping to turn things around over the next 3 games. Against all odds, the Remparts won the first 2 of the 3 games in hostile territory to bring the series back to the Colis\u00e9e Pepsi.\u00a0 Trailing 3-2 in the series, the Remparts were poised to play the next two games on home ice. Cheered loudly by an electrified crowd, the boys blanked the opposition in both game six and seven, winning 3-0 both times to close out the series, and setting the stage for an appearance in the final four. This was only the fifth time in a forty-year history of the QMJHL that a team has come back to win a series after trailing 0-2. \u00a0Next on tap was the Shawinigan Cataractes, strong off a 105 points season. After winning the first game on home ice, the Remparts were vanquished over the next four games by a relentless Cataractes team. \u00a0Nonetheless, the Remparts have re-written the record books for a third year in a row by shattering their own attendance record. This Canadian national record was broken after the Colis\u00e9e was host to no less than 398 538 fans over the span of the regular season, and a whopping 529 325 if we include the 2009 playoffs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With many new faces on their roster at the start of the 2009-10 season, the Remparts hope to maintain their ranking among the best teams of the QMJHL and to reach the Memorial Cup.\u00a0 During the December trading period, Patrick Roy and his trusted advisers realize that the Remparts will need a few more players to reach their goal, since the competition promises to be fierce. \u00a0He then decides to sacrifice two veterans, Kelsey Tessier and Samuel Groulx, in return for up-and-coming prospects.\u00a0 Even with the many changes made to the roster, with 10 new players joining the team, the Remparts end the season with a record of 41 wins, 20 losses, 3 overtime losses and 4 shootout losses, for a total of 89 points.\u00a0 They rank 3rd<\/sup> in the general standings due to their 1st<\/sup> place in the Telus Eastern Division.\u00a0 In the first playoff round, they play the Acadie-Bathurst Titans who offer strong competition, but the Remparts win the series in five games, with four wins and one loss.\u00a0 The second round represents a bigger challenge, as they face the Victoriaville Tigres who ended the season with 95 points.\u00a0 The Remparts finally lose in four games against the Tigres.\u00a0 For the fourth year in a row, the Remparts reach a new regular season attendance record for a Canadian junior team, with 410,981 in attendance for home games, an average of 12,088 cheering fans per game.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 2010-11 season confounded all of the experts. \u00a0While many believed that the Remparts would finish fifth or sixth among the QJMHL teams, no one expected that Patrick Roy\u2019s men would again finish first in the Telus East Division thanks to 48 victories, 16 losses, an overtime loss and three shoot-out losses, for a total of 100 points.\u00a0 This record places them third in the general standings, only two points behind the second place Montr\u00e9al Juniors.\u00a0 The 2010-11 edition of the Remparts has no fewer than 13 new faces.\u00a0 Thanks to the character and determination shown by the team\u2019s young players throughout the playoffs, everything seems possible, especially since the Remparts are guaranteed home ice advantage, at least for the first two series.\u00a0 In the first round, the Remparts meet the Val d\u2019Or Foreurs, and this best of seven series ends after four games (4-0) in favour of Patrick Roy\u2019s men.\u00a0 The following quarter-final series has them playing the Shawinigan Cataractes.\u00a0 After taking a 3-1 lead after four games, the Remparts struggle and the Cataractes even the series, provoking a seventh and deciding game.\u00a0 Before a frenzied crowd of 12,555, the Remparts win 9-2 against the Cataractes.\u00a0 Then, in the semi-final, it is the Gatineau Olympiques\u2019 turn to face the Remparts.\u00a0 After losing their first game 2-1 at Colis\u00e9e Pepsi, the Remparts succeed in winning the three subsequent games, now leading 3-1 in the series. \u00a0Once again, their adversaries show their grit in taking the next two games to push the series to the limit.\u00a0 After a bitterly contested series, with the first four games decided by one goal, the Remparts run out of gas and lose the seventh game 5-2.\u00a0 In spite of their loss, the Remparts earn a standing ovation from their devoted fans.\u00a0 In 2010-11, 511,679 of them supported their team throughout the regular season and the playoffs.<\/p>\n

What a 2011-12 season!\u00a0 Once again, the Remparts, seen as among the best 6 or 7 clubs in the league, succeed in finishing 5th<\/sup> overall in the Courteau circuit with 93 points.\u00a0 They are just one point behind the 4th<\/sup>-place Victoriaville Tigres with a strong record of 43 wins, 18 losses, 5 losses in overtime and 2 in shootout.\u00a0 They even start the year 2012 in 1st<\/sup> place overall.\u00a0 Over the season, no fewer than 21 new players join the team, including 9 rookies.\u00a0 The arrival of young players like Mikhail Grigorenko, Anthony Duclair, Adam Erne and Nick Sorensen give extra jump to the team, and their performances once again help make it one of the best clubs in the league. The tight team rankings mean that the Remparts find out their first playoff opponents only after the end of the regular season.\u00a0 In the first round they meet the Drummondville Voltigeurs.\u00a0 To general surprise, Patrick Roy\u2019s men eliminate their adversaries in four games.\u00a0 After the first-round elimination of several leading teams, the Remparts retain home ice advantage in the second round where they meet the Halifax Mooseheads.\u00a0 In a hard-fought series the Remparts take a 3-0 series lead, winning their two games at home, then the first in Halifax.\u00a0 It looks as though the finish is at hand.\u00a0 After letting games 4 and 5 slip away in Halifax, the Remparts return home to their stoked-up fans, but it isn\u2019t enough.\u00a0 They fall 5-2 in game 6 and in game 7 – hotly disputed before a crowd of 11,093 – they lose 5-4 in overtime, putting an end to a rousing season.\u00a0 With 469,799 spectators in attendance (regular season and playoffs) in this 15th<\/sup> year after the team\u2019s renaissance, the Remparts can still be proud to have drawn a total of almost 5 million fans.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 2012-13 season was full of surprises, marked by injuries to key players and the work stoppage in the National Hockey League that raised many questions about the status of the Remparts\u2019 European players.\u00a0 Throughout, Patrick Roy once again led his team with a master\u2019s hand to place fifth overall with a record of 42 wins, 21 losses, 3 overtime losses, and two losses in shootout.\u00a0 With this record, the Remparts\u2019 head coach became the first in QJMHL history to finish an eighth consecutive season with a record of .500 or more.\u00a0 Mikhail Grigorenko, drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the NHL draft (12th<\/sup> overall) had a spectacular season\u2019s start with 29 goals and 21 assists for 50 points in 32 games.\u00a0 With the end of the NHL\u2019s work stoppage in January, he left the Remparts for the Sabres\u2019 training camp and would not return to the Remparts until the last game of this season, having played 22 games in the NHL.\u00a0 After Grigorenko\u2019s departure in January, the Remparts fall on hard times, losing five consecutive games including a humiliating 11-2 defeat against the Halifax Mooseheads.\u00a0 From that moment on, the young players take matters into their own hands.\u00a0 Defying the experts, they finish the season with an impressive 17-5-2-0 record in their last 24 games.\u00a0 Ready for the playoffs, they meet the Chicoutimi Saguen\u00e9ens in the first round.\u00a0 The Remparts begin the series at home in front of their fans and have a surprise:\u00a0 6-3 in favour of the Sags.\u00a0 The Remparts win the next three games, taking a 3-1 lead in the series.\u00a0 They suffer defeat at Colis\u00e9e Pepsi once again, this time by a score of 3-1.\u00a0 Returning to Centre Georges-V\u00e9zina, the Remparts win 4-3 in overtime thanks to a goal by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Bergeron.\u00a0 The quarterfinal series pits the Remparts against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies who finished their regular season with 84 points, five fewer than the Remparts.\u00a0 Once again, they lose their first game of the series, 6-1 before their fans.\u00a0 They win the next game 4-2.\u00a0 The series is played in a 2-3-2 format due to the distance separating the teams, and the Huskies win the next three games on home ice, moving on to the semi-finals.\u00a0 It is important to note that in 11 playoff games, the Remparts managed to win only two games at home despite a home record of 23-10-1-0 in the regular season.\u00a0 Once again, fan support was strong throughout the regular season, with 385,727 spectators passing through the turnstiles.\u00a0 During the playoffs, 58,853 fans came to cheer on their favourites.<\/p>\n

The start of the of the 2013-14 season sees the Remparts write a new chapter of their history when General Manager and Head Coach since 2003, Patrick Roy, is named Vice-President of Hockey Operations and Head coach of the Colorado Avalanche in May 2013.
\nPatrick Roy left the Remparts with an impressive record of 348 wins and 196 losses in 544 games behind the bench. For this new chapter, the Remparts owners have appointed Philippe Boucher as their new General Manager and Head Coach. Prior to joining the Remparts, Philippe was the General Manager of the Rimouski Oceanic for two years where he built a solid and competitive team. For his success there, he won the Maurice-Filion Trophy as the General Manager of the year in 2013.\u00a0 He also brings along 17 years of NHL experience having played with Buffalo, Los Angeles, Dallas and Pittsburgh, a team with whom he won the Stanley cup in 2009. His experience and competence was vital in helping lead a young team with a lot of new faces joining the ranks.\u00a0 The Remparts had a rough start to the season winning only two of their first ten games. \u00a0The veterans and younger players soon took charge and succeeded to climb up the standings and remain close to the top, all along while dealing with numerous injuries.\u00a0 During the mid-season trade period, a few changes such as the departure of team captain Ryan Culkin for Drummondville, brought in more fresh faces to the lineup. In addition, according to a Canadian Hockey League rule, the Remparts benefitted by dressing three European players when Russian born forward Mikhail Grigorenko was assigned back to Quebec by the Buffalo Sabres, thus joining Nick Sorensen and Fabrice Herzog.\u00a0 The standings remained tight until the end of the regular season as the Remparts finished 7th<\/sup> overall with 39 wins, 17 losses, 5 shoot-out losses and 7 overtime losses for a total of 90 points, only 9 points away from first overall Baie-Comeau Drakkar.\u00a0 The playoff brackets are determined after the last game whereas the Remparts are set to meet the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the first round. For the second consecutive year, the team is faced with a 2-3-2 format, since the distance separating the two teams is significant. \u00a0The Remparts will drop the first game in overtime 5-4 at the Colis\u00e9e Pepsi but will bounce back in game two with a 7-3 win. The season will come to a close shortly after as the Remparts lost the next three games in Rouyn 5-2, 4-1 and 6-2.\u00a0 The 2013-2014 season was characterized by a total of 279-man games missed, which is way above average during and 68 game season. The performances and emergence of many young talented players is proof that the future is bright for the Remparts. In addition, since the Remparts will be the hosts of the 2015 Mastercard Memorial Cup in May, Philippe Boucher and his hockey staff will concentrate all their energy on building a competitive and winning team next season.<\/p>\n

Being the host team of the Mastercard Memorial Cup tournament, there is a ton of pressure on the Remparts to start the 2014-15 season. With a lot of players at NHL teams training camp, the team doesn\u2019t have a start as good as expected. But with the return of numerous key elements, the Red Devils start showing their true face. At the trade deadline, general manager Philippe Boucher adds some depth to the team, acquiring J\u00e9r\u00f4me Verrier, Vladimir Tkachev, Matt Murphy, Zachary Fucale and Brian Lovell. Anthony Duclair, who started the years with the New York Rangers in the NHL, is also added to the roster. The Remparts finish the season in 4th<\/sup> position, with 83 points (40 victories). For the first round of the playoffs, they face the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, one of the best teams in the QMJHL in the second half of the season. After seven hard fought games, Quebec wins the series. From then, the Remparts had an impressive 11 wins streak, sweeping the Charlottetown Islanders and the Moncton Wildcats, to face the Rimouski Oceanic in the final. It is with the feeling that they have earned their place in the Memorial Cup tournament that the Remparts face the Kelowna Rockets, Western Hockey League champions, in their first game. Showing no complex, the Red Devils win the game 4-3. Two days later, they face the Ontario Hockey League champions, the Oshawa Generals. Leading 4-3 with two minutes to play, Oshawa scored during a powerplay to force overtime. The Generals will eventually win the game. To end the preliminary round, Philippe Boucher\u2019s troop must face, once again, the Rimouski Oceanic. The Bas-St-Laurent team will win the game 4-0, forcing a rematch in a tie-break. This time, the Remparts get the last word with a 5-2 win, earning the right to play the semi-final game. The task is however colossal: play a third game in three nights against the Kelowna Rockets, who\u2019s been resting for two days. The Remparts were not able to cause a surprise and see their tournament end with a 9-3 loss.<\/p>\n

The Remparts started the 2015-16 season by offering quality hockey that exceeded expectations. The team\u2019s arrival at the Videotron Centre, where they played their first home game in front of a sellout crowd of 18,259 fans, is undoubtedly a major turning point in the history of the Remparts. \u00a0After 34 games, the team had a record of 19-12-3-0, good for 41 points in the standings which was only one-point shy of the team\u2019s record from the previous year, midway through the 2014-15 season. After Christmas, the hockey department made the decision to move their best players in order to immediately replenish their bank of draft picks. Therefore, key players like Murphy, Brouillard, Timashov and Carozza helped Philippe Boucher acquire a total of 11 draft picks. Despite a 9-21-3-1 record for 22 points, many young players were given a lot of ice time and gained valuable experience. The team witnessed the emergence of young talent such as Louis-Filip C\u00f4t\u00e9, Christian Huntley, Derek Gentile, Olivier Garneau, and Matthew Boucher, who at 18, finished as the first team\u2019s top scorer. In addition, rookie goalie Evgeny Kiselev, who was earlier acquired off waivers, also contributed to the promising future for the Quebec organization. This year more than ever, hockey fans of the Quebec City area were numerous to attend home games at the Videotron Centre. With a season total of 470,384 spectators and averaging 13,834 fans per game, the Remparts established a new QMJHL and CHL record for the highest number of spectators in a single season. The previous mark of 410,981 fans was achieved during the 2008-09 season and\u00a0also belonged to the Remparts. Moreover, the organization also had the privilege to witness and congratulate the 6,500, 000th<\/sup> fan of their history (regular season and playoffs included) who attended the last home game of the regular season.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2016-17 season will have made many lying, since at the start of the season, many experts said that the Remparts would not participate to the playoff series, while seven new players were added to the roster over the Summer and that the rebuilding process continues. From the beginning of the season, the young players showed a good work ethic and a lot of determination in their play since at mid-season, the Remparts had a record of 19-12-2-1 for 41 points. Several trades were made in December while seven new players joined the team and many draft picks were added, including a 1st<\/sup> round pick (Saint John), a 2nd<\/sup> round choice (Cape Breton) and two 3rd<\/sup> round picks (Gatineau and Cape Breton). The Remparts will then select six players during the first five rounds of the next Draft in June, as well as ten picks in the subsequent rounds. \u00a0A hockey team face adversity during the season and it was the case for the Remparts, who had to manage with significant injuries to key players of the organization. One after one, Matthew Boucher, Olivier Garneau and Dmitry Buynitskiy suffered major injuries which required them to be absent for the last five weeks of the regular season. \u00a0Despite this, Philippe Boucher’s players finished the season with a record over .500, with 31 wins, 30 losses, four overtime losses and three shootout losses for a total of 69 points, ranking 11th<\/sup> overall of the QMJHL general standings. They will be part of the playoffs for a 20th<\/sup> season in a row and they will play against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the first round.\u00a0 After two games in Bathurst where the Remparts failed to win, they returned to the Videotron Centre, trailing 0-2 in the series, but confident of being able to make a come back.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it is too difficult for a young team to face a more mature and experienced team. The Remparts lost in four games, but this series allowed the players to gain experience. The Remparts are now well-positioned for the future and will remain very competitive, especially because most of the players will return.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After ending a rebuilding process that has spread over the past two seasons, the Remparts started the 2017-18 season with optimism and won eight of their first ten games. Nine new players were added to the team’s lineup during the Summer, and in the first days of the season, Philippe Boucher and his coaching staff stressed to his players the importance of teamwork. Several times during the season, the Remparts showed a lot of character by coming from behind to win important games. During the mid-season trade period, Philippe Boucher pulled the trigger on trades to allow his team to be even more competitive and ready for the playoffs. The Remparts finished the season with a total of 40 wins, 22 losses, 3 shootout losses and 3 overtime losses for 86 points to finish 8th<\/sup> overall among the QMJHL standings. With 40 wins, it was the 12th<\/sup> time since 1997 that the team reached that mark.\u00a0 On February 25th<\/sup>, by winning 2-1 in overtime against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the Remparts also set a new QMJHL record for the most overtime wins in a season with 12. For the 21st<\/sup> time in their history, the Remparts made the playoffs and were set to meet the Charlottetown Islanders in the first round. The Islanders, who finished 9th<\/sup> with 81 points, proved to be a formidable adversary after winning the first game on the ice of the Videotron Center by the score of 4-2. Having tied the series with a 3-0 victory in the 2nd<\/sup> game, the Remparts left for Charlottetown to continue the series which was set in a 2-3-2 format. Philippe Boucher’s team won one game and returned to Quebec trailing 2-3 in the series. With the unconditional support of their fans, the Remparts won the sixth game 5-2 and forced a winner take all game 7.\u00a0 During game seven, the score was tied 2-2 after two periods. At the beginning of the third period, the Islanders put a lot of pressure on the local team and managed to score four goals in just under four minutes on their way to an 8-3 win. This ended the Remparts season. A major highlight of the season is that after 34 regular season games, the Remparts attracted 306,061 spectators for an average of 9,002 per game, the best attendance average in Canada among the 60 Canadian Hockey League teams.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On April 11th<\/sup>, a few days after being eliminated, the team’s President, Jacques Tanguay and Philippe Boucher spoke at the season ending press conference. Boucher announced that he was stepping down from both his General Manager and Head Coaching jobs, positions he had assumed for five years.\u00a0 In five seasons behind the bench, he had a record of 176 wins and 161 losses. Under his leadership, the Remparts took part in the playoffs in each of his five seasons. They participated to the first round (2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018), the 2015 President’s Cup final, followed by a participation as the host team of the 2015 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament (lost in semi-finals). The Remparts achieved a total record of 19 wins and 23 losses in five playoff appearances.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On April 24, 2019, the Remparts began a new era with the announcement of the return of Patrick Roy as General Manager and Head Coach of the team. While knowing that there will be a lot of work to do, it is with a lot of enthusiasm that he accepted the challenge to once again lead the team with whom he experienced so many thrills during his previous 10 year run. He started by bringing back his faithful partner, Martin Laperri\u00e8re to the position of Associate Coach and Benoit Desrosiers, who began his second season behind the team\u2019s bench as Assistant Coach. With 14 players from the 2017-18 roster returning to start the season, the Remparts kept a good pace producing a record of 15 wins, 13 losses, three overtime losses and three losses by way of shootout, totalling 36 points. During the mid-season trade period, Patrick Roy decided to make several trades in order to have a more representative team and a team custom made to his image. In addition, he was able to acquire more draft picks. In early January, no less than ten players were replaced by fresh new faces. Furthermore, the Remparts will now speak 18 times during the QMJHL Draft in June. The Remparts held firmly to the 8th<\/sup> spot of the Eastern Conference, from October to the end of the season, qualifying for the playoffs for a 23rd<\/sup> consecutive season. Many experts predicted that Patrick Roy’s team would not win a single game in the first playoff round against the 2019 Memorial Cup host team, the Halifax Mooseheads. Nonetheless, the Remparts played inspired hockey and even took a 2-0 series lead, beating Halifax on the road, by scores of 3-2 and a 5-4 overtime game. The 2-3-2 series format saw the Mooseheads win the next two games, before the Remparts bounced back with a 4-2 game 5 winning effort. On Monday, April 1st<\/sup>, the Remparts jumped on the ice in Halifax hoping to upset the Mooseheads and end the series. The experienced Mooseheads, confident and encouraged by their fans, pushed the series to the limit with a 6-1 win. The seventh and final game featured two teams determined to win. In a hard fought game until the end, the Remparts saw their season, and Patrick Roy\u2019s return behind the bench, come to a close with a 3-1 loss. An enthusiastic era is taking shape in Quebec, as the players have embraced the new philosophy of the coaching staff and have demonstrated a good work ethic all season long, which sets the stage for an exciting future for the franchise and the fans.<\/p>\n

We will remember the 2019-20 season for a long time. The season was off to a good start as the team recorded eight wins and only two losses in their first ten games. The explosive start included a six-game winning streak on the road.\u00a0 Although the Remparts roster included 12 rookie players, nine of which were under 18, Patrick Roy\u2019s team showed a lot of character game after game. The trade period which began on December 15th<\/sup>\u00a0led to several veterans to leave Quebec. Carmine-Anthony Pagliarulo, Andrew Coxhead, F\u00e9lix Bibeau, F\u00e9lix-Olivier Chouinard and Edouard St-Laurent all left one after another, clearing the way for the younger players to assume bigger playing roles. New additions like Cole Cormier (17), Th\u00e9o Rochette (18) and Gabriel Belley-Pelletier (18) joined the team.\u00a0 Halfway through the regular season calendar, the Remparts compiled 13 wins, 20 losses and one shootout loss. The main objective still remained to be part of the playoffs. The young players continued their hard work to maintain a record of 14 wins, 12 losses and four overtime losses in the last 30 games on the regular season. It was finally with a 4-1 victory over the Wildcats in Moncton on March 7th<\/sup> that the Remparts secured their playoff spot for a 24th<\/sup> consecutive season. No one could predict however that this game would be the last one played by the Remparts in the 2019-20 season. On March 12th<\/sup>, the QMJHL announced that the remainder of the season, as well as all hockey activities, were suspended until further notice due to the worldwide pandemic of the Coronavirus (Covid-19). Then on March 17th<\/sup>, the QMJHL confirmed that the rest of the scheduled games for the 2019-20 regular season calendar, which was supposed to end on March 21st<\/sup>, were cancelled,\u00a0therefore determining the final standings. The Remparts finally ranked 14th<\/sup> with 59 points in 64 games.\u00a0 The annual draft selection, scheduled for June 5th<\/sup>, was also canceled on March 18th<\/sup>. The hopes to play in the playoffs were dashed when on March 23rd<\/sup>, the Commissioner and the Assembly of the QMJHL members made the decision to cancel the President’s Cup series. Taking into consideration the high risks of playing the playoffs and after the Quebec Government issued important safety measures, the league complied in order to preserve the safety and health of everyone. Despite the abrupt end to the season, the team\u2019s young players demonstrated great skills and hinted that the future is quite bright in Quebec City.\u00a0After an abrupt end to the 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the chance for a return to normal activities for the 2020-2021 season did not look good over the Summer. Against all odds, the season was given the green light since games would be played behind closed doors. The Remparts began their season on October 3rd<\/sup> with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Victoriaville Tigres, followed the next day with a 3-1 win over the Oc\u00e9anic in Rimouski. Unfortunately, on October 5th<\/sup>, after only two games, the Capitale-Nationale region was among the areas determined as red zones, which meant that all team activities would be, once again, put on hold.\u00a0 With the exception of practices, no games were allowed to be played. Over the next few weeks, the QMJHL evaluated different options before finally allowing the Remparts and seven other teams to return to competition on November 17th<\/sup>. The scenario would encompass teams to play in a protected environment. This first bubble would last 10 days\u00a0 and allow teams to play six games each. The Remparts posted a 4-2-2-0 record after 8 games. On November 30th<\/sup>, activities were once again stopped due to the pandemic which continued to wreak havoc in Quebec. An eight-week period of inactivity would follow until it was decided that all remaining games would be played in protected environments across different cities of the Province of Qu\u00e9bec. In total, the Remparts played 32 games for a record of 18-9-4-1 and 41 points. However, the final division standings would be determined by the winning percentage since not all teams had played the same number of games. Therefore, having compiled a percentage of .625, the Remparts would rank fourth in the Eastern Division and face the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the first round of playoffs. Prior to the first game, a COVID-19 outbreak struck the Remparts and the Gatineau Olympiques, which delayed the start of the playoffs.\u00a0 It was finally on April 27th<\/sup> that the first round of the playoffs began in the protected environment of Drummondville. Thanks to the dazzling performances of goalkeeper Thomas Sigouin and the hard work of all the players, Patrick Roy’s team won the series in three games. Sigouin would even rewrite the QMJHL record books by scoring a goal in the third and final game, therefore becoming the first goaltender to ever register a goal in a playoff series. The next opponent in the quarter-final series would be the Chicoutimi Saguen\u00e9ens, this time, in the protected environment of the Videotron Center. The young Remparts faced an experienced team and lost in three games. The 2020-21 season was one that will be remembered by both players and the hockey staff for all the sacrifices they made and the adversity they faced on several occasions in order to play in a safe environment. Nonetheless, it is great hope that fans can look forward to the next season which will be the 25th<\/sup> anniversary of the new generation of the team.<\/p>\n

Year after year, the team is savouring success and the Qu\u00e9bec Remparts\u2019 organization, beginning with its owners, the team personnel and the players are very proud to have orchestrated the RETURN OF A TRADITION!<\/strong><\/p>\n
