ST. JOHN’S, NL — The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has named Newfoundland Regiment President Glenn Stanford and Vice President Ken O'Leary as the co-recipients of the John Horman Trophy for the 2025-26 season.

Awarded annually to the league's Executive of the Year. The announcement marks a historic moment for the Regiment, recognizing the pair's extraordinary efforts in building the franchise from the ground up and delivering one of the most successful inaugural seasons in QMJHL history.

The John Horman Trophy is awarded based on criteria including leadership, creative revenue initiatives, franchise operations, community involvement, and contributions to the visibility of both the team and the QMJHL. The Regiment's performance across every one of those categories in year one made Stanford and O'Leary the clear choice for the award.

“This honour belongs to everyone who poured themselves into building this organization. The ownership group who believed in this vision and made it possible, the staff we assembled who showed up and delivered every single day, and the fans who came out and made Mary Brown's Centre one of the loudest buildings in this league. I also want to acknowledge the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Their legacy gave our club its soul, and the pride they carry for this province is something we try to honour every time we step on that ice. Ken and I set out to build something the fans of this province could be proud of, and to see them embrace the Regiment the way they did in year one is something we will never take for granted. We are just getting started.”
- Glenn Stanford, President, Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club

“I am truly humbled by this recognition, and to receive it alongside Glenn Stanford makes it something I will cherish for the rest of my career. Glenn is a mentor, a legend in this community, and his dedication to ensuring that this province continues to develop not only hockey players but front office staff and hockey professionals is something I have a tremendous amount of respect for. But neither of us could have done any of this without the incredible team we assembled. They proved that we are a hockey town, and that hockey development, both on and off the ice, is as strong as ever in Newfoundland and Labrador. This trophy is theirs as much as ours”
- Ken O’Leary, Vice-President, Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club

ST. JOHN’S, NL — The Newfoundland Regiment are pleased to share the team has officially submitted their intent to bid to host the 2028 Memorial Cup in St. John's.

The submission positions St. John's as a candidate to host the Canadian Hockey League's premier championship event, bringing together the top teams in major junior hockey from across the country for the first time ever in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"In the history of the Memorial Cup, this province has never had the honour of hosting this championship," said Glenn Stanford, President of the Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club." The time has never been more right, the momentum has never been stronger, and we are confident that St. John's is ready to deliver a Memorial Cup that will be remembered for generations."

The bid builds on Newfoundland and Labrador's established track record of successfully delivering major national events. Mary Brown's Centre and the broader St. John's region have hosted events ranging from the Montana’s Brier to NHL pre-season games and the East Coast Music Awards, demonstrating the city's proven capacity and hospitality on the national stage.

The Newfoundland Regiment's inaugural 2025-26 QMJHL season laid the foundation for this bid in remarkable fashion. The club posted a 38-22-3-1 regular season record, advanced to the second round of the playoffs, and drew an average of more than 5,300 fans per game at Mary Brown's Centre, setting a QMJHL attendance record for a first-year franchise.

"What this community did in year one was extraordinary," Stanford added. "The people of Newfoundland and Labrador embraced this team and this game with full force. Hosting the Memorial Cup in 2028 would be a celebration of everything this province represents: community, resilience and pride."
The bid carries an added level of sentiment given the Regiment's deep connection to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Canada's oldest regiment, and the province's broader legacy of remembrance. Memorial University of Newfoundland was founded and named in honour of Newfoundlanders lost in both World Wars. In no other Canadian city does the name "Memorial Cup" carry such weight.

The Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club will now await the CHL's shortlisting process before proceeding to the Formal Written Bid stage.

HALIFAX, NS – The Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club has been announced as a finalist for two QMJHL Awards of Excellence, the Jean-Sawyer Trophy and the John-Horman Trophy, adding further league recognition to the team's record-breaking inaugural season.

Jean-Sawyer Trophy – Marketing Team of the Year: Awarded annually to the QMJHL’s outstanding marketing organization, the Regiment is named alongside the Chicoutimi Saguéeens and Québec Remparts. The club earned the nod on the strength of 54 million content views across digital platforms, 60,000-plus social media followers built from scratch in year one, and a game-day atmosphere at Mary Brown’s Centre that sold out playoff games and set a new standard for in-arena experience. The Regiment’s reach extended well beyond St. John’s through deeply ingrained community programming that brought Regiment Academy to Labrador and the west coast of Newfoundland, along with more than 380 hours invested into community visits throughout the Avalon Peninsula.

John Horman Trophy – Executive of the Year: Presented to the QMJHL’s top executive, President Glenn Stanford and Vice President Ken O’Leary are named as co-finalists alongside Serge Proulx of Chicoutimi and Tommy Castonguay of Québec. The award recognizes leadership, creative revenue generation, franchise operations, and community impact. Stanford and O’Leary delivered a QMJHL first-year attendance record of 5,234 average fans per game, sponsorship and merchandise sales amongst the league leaders, and more than $500,000 raised for local charities through the Foundation’s 50/50 program – all while building a 17-person full-time and approximately 50 part-time staff from the ground up.

“To be announced as finalists alongside organizations like Chicoutimi and Québec in just our first year means a great deal and further showcases the passion for Junior Hockey in our market. These honours belong to our entire organization, staff, partners, and our fans.”

To complete the trade that sent Justin Larose to Newfoundland last summer, the Regiment sent their 2027 2nd round pick to the Drummondville Voltigeurs in exchange for their own 3rd round pick from the same draft.

ST. JOHN’S, NL — The Newfoundland Regiment Hockey Club announced today that President Glenn Stanford has been named the recipient of the Paul-Dumont Trophy, awarded annually by the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) to the league’s Personality of the Year. The award was presented Wednesday as part of the QMJHL’s annual Golden Puck ceremony recognizing individual excellence across the 2025-26 season.

Presented since the 1989-90 season, the Paul-Dumont Trophy honours individuals who exemplify outstanding character, leadership and positive media contributions that enhance the image and well-being of the QMJHL. The award has traditionally been presented to players, making Stanford’s selection as a front office executive a distinguished and rare recognition of the impact he and the Regiment organization have had on the league in their inaugural season.

In its first year of play, the Regiment set a new standard for QMJHL expansion franchises, averaging 5,234 spectators per game at Mary Brown’s Centre in St. John’s, a record for any first-year club in league history. The team finished third in the Eastern Conference and sixth overall in the QMJHL standings. Stanford, who brings extensive experience in professional hockey from his work in the AHL and ECHL among other leagues, was credited by the league for his deep familiarity with the St. John’s market and his role in the success of major junior hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Whenever a person receives an award, it is never about the individual, but more about the people around them,” said Stanford. “Such is the case here. Our front office staff works tirelessly behind the scenes. Gordie and the coaching staff put a great product on the ice. And our season ticket holders, corporate partners and fans stepped up in a way that made everything possible. I am proud to represent all of them in receiving this honour, and deeply grateful to the QMJHL for this recognition.”

The Regiment also announced that General Manager Gordie Dwyer was named a finalist for the Maurice-Filion Trophy, presented each season to the QMJHL’s General Manager of the Year. The award was presented to Yanick Jean of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, who guided his club to a second-place regular season finish just one point behind the Moncton Wildcats for top spot in the QMJHL.

Dwyer’s finalist recognition reflects a series of formative roster decisions that helped establish the Regiment as a competitive presence in the Eastern Conference. Prior to the season, Dwyer acquired forward Justin Larose, selected Marek Danicek in the CHL Import Draft and added veteran Dominic Pilote.
