GAME RECAP: Titan suffer first loss of the season
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan suffered its first loss of the 2024 season. Sunday afternoon the Charlottetown Islanders broke the Titan three game win streak, to pull away with a 2-0 win at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
It was a slow opening period for both teams.
The first bit of action wouldn’t come until the 10-minute mark of the opening frame when Alexandre Lallier took a slashing penalty to put the Islanders on the powerplay. As they’ve done all season long, the Titan successfully killed it off. The Islanders and Titan combined for just 12 shots in the opening frame. The period saw plenty of physicality with scrums and chirping almost every whistle. The two teams would go into the break tied at zero.
About seven minutes into the middle period, the Islanders would strike first as Spencer Caines beat Mathis Langevin five-hole to give the Isles a 1-0 lead. After an Émile Perron high-sticking penalty later on, the Islanders would strike again as Alexis Michaud beat Langevin glove side to double the Islanders’ lead. It was the first powerplay goal allowed by the Titan this season. The Islanders would be up 2-0 going into the intermission.
The third period saw a lot more spark from the Titan producing shot after shot, but couldn’t seem to beat Islanders goalie, Nicholas Ruccia. The Titan went on a powerplay later in the period. Chaos ensued in front of the net before Dawson Sharkey poked the rebound past Ruccia to score what seemed to be his first of the year. However, after video review, the play was called offside. The Titan continued to pound the shots at Ruccia, as they outshot the Islanders 13-4 in the final frame. Unfortunately, Charlottetown would take the victory 2-0 and handed the Titan their first loss of the season.
Goaltender Langevin, who the Titan claimed off of waivers earlier this season, earned the second star after making 19 saves in his Titan debut.
Sunday afternoon the Titan wore orange jerseys specially designed in recognition and observance of National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. The game-worn jerseys are now available for auction at https://encanpro.ca/auctions/abtitan
