GAME RECAP: Strong third period lifts Sea Dogs over Titan
The Saint John Sea Dogs downed the Acadie-Bathurst Titan Thursday night at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League action. Saint John finished the night with a 6-3 victory over the home side.
Acadie-Bathurst came out firing in the first period, as they peppered Sea Dogs goaltender, Justin Robinson. Despite the effort, it was the Sea Dogs who scored the icebreaker. New Brunswick native, Matteo Mann beat Josh Fleming with a far side shot to put Saint John up one. The Titan would get a powerplay about five minutes later when Olivier Duhamel went off for holding. With the man advantage, Blake Pilgrim-Edwards put the puck on net before Dawson Sharkey would put it by Robinson with a beautiful re-direction. Sharkey, who missed the first two games due to suspension, scored his first goal of the year to knot the game up at one. Late in the period, Columbus Blue Jackets prospect, Tyler Peddle would beat Fleming to give the Sea Dogs the lead heading into intermission.
Titan Captain Colby Huggan scored on the breakaway in the second frame, as he squeezed the puck blocker side on Robinson to tie the game 2-2. Tyson Goguen – who was acquired from the Rimouski Oceanic at the draft – got an assist on the play, giving him his first point as a member of the Titan. Halfway through the period, another Titan acquisition, François-James Buteau – who was named the team’s Student-Athlete of the Month prior to the game – danced through a couple of Sea Dogs defenders after receiving a beautiful no-look pass from Huggan. Buteau’s third of the year put the Titan up 3-2 going into the break.
The third period was all Sea Dogs.
After a Titan penalty, Elliot Dubé pulled the game even with his second of the season. Seven minutes into the final frame, Jacob Beaulieu would fire the eventual game winner past Fleming to give the Sea Dogs the 4-3 lead. After Peddle got tangled up with Biagio Jr. Daniele and Buteau in the corner, Nate Tivey snuck in behind the play before slipping a backhander past Fleming to give the Sea Dogs a two-goal cushion. Beaulieu would score a goal with six minutes to go and double his team’s lead and win the game 6-3 by the buzzer.
Huggan was named the First Star of the game for his three-point night. Fleming finished the night with 27 saves in his first loss of the season.
