Game Recap – March 23th
For the second time in four days, the Gatineau Olympiques and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada faced each other. Gatineau won the first match with a score of 5-4 in overtime.
With just 2:12 of play, the Armada benefited from a two-man power play. After a nice exchange between Mathias Laferrière and Miguel Tourigny from the top of the face-off circles, the latter player took a shot on reception to open the score.
That goal gave the Armada some momentum until they were also penalized for two minutes. The Olympiques didn’t create too much on the power play but retained control of the game from that point on.
On the move and with increasing speed, Tristan Allard carried the puck to the other end of the ice before beating Olivier Adam between the pads to tie the game with his sixth goal of the season.
With only 16 seconds to go, the Gatineau goalkeeper, Rémi Poirier, suffered a turnaround when he wanted to clear his territory. Benjamin Corbeil passed the puck to Blake Richardson on the other side who deposited the puck in an open net.
2nd period
Each team traded good scoring chances and good streaks but both two goalkeepers remained strong during the second period.
It was during a 4 against 4 and with a little less than two minutes left that the Armada capitalized when attacking with three players against one. Mathias Laferrière took his time before handing the puck over to Simon Pinard who was left alone at Poirier’s left. That goal increased the Armada’s lead by two.
3rd period
The Olympiques took advantage of a power play early in the period and Manix Landry, who else, made the opponents regret their penalty. Coming to the right wing, our captain scored with a shot to the top of the net and narrowed the gap to one goal. It was Landry’s fifth goal in three games who was also named on the QMJHL’s final team this week.
Gatineau continued to apply constant pressure and, as in previous games, it paid off. Metis Roelens’ relentlessness ultimately benefited Alexei Prokopenko who jumped on the free puck near the net to score his third of the season and tied the game.
With a little more than two minutes to go in the period, Evgenii Kashnikov, wanting to protect his goalkeeper, received a five-minute penalty for a double check to the head. The Armada were well positioned in the Olympiques territory but couldn’t take advantage of it. The game went into overtime.
Overtime
The Olympiques withstood the remaining 2:53 of the major penalty and there was no scoring during the rest of the overtime period.
The Armada won the game with the shoot-out, thanks to Zachary Roy’s goal.
Final score: 4-3 (SO)
