The Halifax Mooseheads added another face to the 2026 GoodLife Fitness Training Camp roster on Wednesday as 20-year-old forward Will Hughes joined the team on a free agent invitation.<\/p>\n

Hughes will attempt to fill the vacant overage roster spot that became available when goaltender Owen Bresson was left off the camp list.<\/p>\n

The Ottawa, ON native plays centre and was the leading scorer and Captain of the Collingwood Blues last season in the OJHL. He scored 78 points on 26 goals and 52 assists while suiting up in 50 games which was tied for fifth-most points in the league. He added another 12 points in 16 playoff games.<\/p>\n

The left-handed shooting Hughes is 5-foot-11 and weighs 185 pounds.<\/p>\n

2026 GoodLife Fitness Mooseheads Training Camp opened on Wednesday in Dartmouth and will continue on Thursday with intrasquad action at 10am and 3pm. The Halifax Mooseheads completed a trade on Wednesday to send 18-year-old forward Caylen Blake<\/a><\/span> to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in exchange for a ninth round pick in 2029’s QMJHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n

Blake played two seasons in Halifax, appearing in 120 regular season games and scoring 46 career points. He had 12 goals and 15 assists last season in his sophomore year with the club. The Corner Brook, NL native was originally selected in the second round, 34th overall in the 2024 QMJHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n

The Halifax Mooseheads are set to usher in a new season as the club officially announced its roster for the 2026 GoodLife Fitness Training Camp, which opens Wednesday with a blend of established veterans, exciting newcomers, and promising draft picks eager to make their mark.<\/p>\n

A total of 46 players are invited to camp<\/a>, including 26 forwards, 15 defencemen, and five goaltenders. Players will report for registration on Wednesday before hitting the ice for afternoon practice sessions as preparations begin for the 2026-27 QMJHL campaign.<\/p>\n

Among the most notable names on the roster are returning overage players Quinn Kennedy and Owen Phillips, both of whom are expected to provide valuable leadership and experience to a young Mooseheads lineup. Halifax currently has one overage roster spot available after goaltender Owen Bresson was not included on the camp roster, leaving management with flexibility as camp unfolds and roster decisions take shape.<\/p>\n

Phillips, the team Captain, is set to play his fifth season in a Halifax uniform and anchors a blueline that includes young stars Malik L’Italien and Cam Minella who are entering their NHL Draft seasons. Both players recently met in the U18 Hlinka Gretzky Cup Final where L’Italien’s Canadian squad won the Gold Medal over Minella and the Americans.<\/p>\n

WEEK 1 TRAINING CAMP SCHEDULE<\/a><\/p>\n

Returning offensive leaders Oleg Kulebiakin and Shawn Carrier are expected to play major roles this season after both heard their names called at the 2026 NHL Draft. Kulebiakin was selected in the third round by the Tampa Bay Lightning, while Carrier became a seventh-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche. Along with newly acquired Vegas Golden Knights prospect Mateo Nobert, the Mooseheads will feature a trio of NHL-drafted forwards expected to drive the club’s offense in 2026-27.<\/p>\n

The Mooseheads’ international contingent will feature two highly anticipated newcomers in Austrian imports Paul Sintschnig and Nico Uschan. Sintschnig, a forward, and Uschan, a defenceman, were selected by Halifax in the CHL Import Draft and will have an opportunity to showcase their talents against QMJHL competition for the first time during training camp.<\/p>\n

Training camp will also provide an exciting first glimpse at Halifax’s newest crop of prospects from the 2026 QMJHL Entry Draft. The organization’s top three selections, \u00c9mrik M\u00e9nard, Jack Cameron, and Maveric Thisdelle, will all participate as they begin competing for future opportunities within the Mooseheads lineup.<\/p>\n

HALIFAX, NS<\/strong> \u2014 The Halifax Mooseheads have announced a new broadcast partnership with JACK 92.9 (CFLT-FM)<\/strong> that will make the station the official home of Mooseheads hockey for the 2026-27 Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League season.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, JACK 92.9 will broadcast all 64 Halifax Mooseheads regular season games<\/strong>, as well as the team’s complete playoff run throughout the 2026-27 season, delivering comprehensive coverage to fans across the Halifax region and beyond.<\/p>\n

The partnership ensures that Mooseheads supporters will have access to every faceoff, goal, and game-changing moment throughout what is shaping up to be an exciting 2026-27 campaign. The Halifax Mooseheads Goodlife Fitness 2026 Training Camp is set to begin on Wednesday, August 19th at the team practice facility in Dartmouth, NS.<\/p>\n

General Manager Cam Russell made many offseason additions via the QMJHL Draft, CHL Import Draft, the free agent market while also bringing in star forward Mateo Nobert in a blockbuster trade with Blainville-Boisbriand. These new faces along with many other prospects will converge on camp and will be split into Teams White and Green for practices and intrasquad action.<\/p>\n

All practice and intrasquad games are free and open to the public to attend.<\/p>\n

The preseason will kick off on Friday, August 21st versus Cape Breton at the Dalhousie University Oulton-Stanish Centre at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now<\/a>. The Halifax Mooseheads will play their preseason opener against Cape Breton at Dalhousie University’s Oulton-Stanish Centre on Friday, August 21st at 7pm.<\/p>\n

Due to venue availability limitations at RBC Centre, the team was required to secure an alternate location and are excited to host the first QMJHL game at the new 952 seat capacity building located at 6191 South Street, Halifax. Parking will be available at the nearby Dalplex parking lot.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s all-CHL roster completed a perfect 5-0 tournament with an 8-1 victory over the United States; the CHL\u2019s 35-player medal group was the largest of any development league at the event<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Thirty-five players and prospects from the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) reached the podium tonight at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton, Alberta, as Canada captured gold, the United States earned silver and Finland claimed bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among those winners were Gold Medallist Malik L’Italian and Silver Medallist Cam Minella of the Halifax Mooseheads. Meantime, Mooseheads Head Coach Brad MacKenzie also comes home with a Gold Medal after serving as an Assistant Coach for Canada.<\/p>\n

The CHL contingent includes all 22 members of Canada\u2019s roster, along with 11 CHL players who represented the United States during the tournament and two who helped Finland capture bronze. Representing 26 CHL clubs, the 35-player group is the largest medal-winning contingent affiliated with any development league at the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada secured its record-extending 26th summer under-18 gold medal with a commanding 8-1 victory over the United States at Rogers Place. <\/span>Maddox Schultz<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Liam Pue<\/span><\/a> (both Regina Pats \/ WHL) each recorded two goals and an assist, <\/span>Brock England<\/span><\/a> (Seattle Thunderbirds \/ WHL) scored twice, <\/span>Jaakko Wycisk<\/span><\/a> (Guelph Storm \/ OHL) added a goal and an assist, and captain<\/span> Landon DuPont<\/span><\/a> (Everett Silvertips \/ WHL) collected four assists. Wycisk capped the scoring at 12:15 of the third period, with <\/span>Kayden Stroeder<\/span><\/a> (Edmonton Oil Kings \/ WHL) and DuPont drawing the assists. Schultz\u2019s first-period power-play goal stood as the game-winner, while <\/span>Leif Oaten<\/span><\/a> (Lethbridge Hurricanes \/ WHL) backstopped the victory and allowed only one goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

The victory gave Canada its first Hlinka Gretzky Cup gold medal since 2024. Canada finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, outscoring its opponents 34-12 with at least six goals in every game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s CHL talent also dominated the final scoring leaderboard. Schultz (3G-7A) and Wycisk (2G-8A) shared the tournament lead with 10 points apiece, with Wycisk leading all players with eight assists. Pue, <\/span>Gavin Burcar<\/span><\/a> (Spokane Chiefs \/ WHL), and Stroeder finished one point back with nine points, while Pue\u2019s six goals led all players.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament\u2019s final top 10 consisted entirely of CHL players and prospects, including seven members of Canada\u2019s gold-medal-winning team. <\/span>Tom\u00e1\u0161 Seli\u010d<\/span><\/a> (Flint Firebirds \/ OHL) and DuPont each finished with eight points, while <\/span>Benjamin Veitch<\/span><\/a> (Newfoundland Regiment \/ QMJHL), <\/span>Camryn Warren<\/span><\/a> (North Bay Battalion \/ OHL) and <\/span>Alessandro Domenichelli<\/span><\/a> (Portland Winterhawks \/ WHL) recorded seven apiece.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier Saturday, Finland erased a 2-0 deficit to earn bronze with a 3-2 victory over Slovakia. <\/span>Paavo Fugleberg<\/span><\/a> (Moncton Wildcats \/ QMJHL) scored Finland\u2019s first goal, while London Knights forward <\/span>Luca Santala<\/span><\/a> tied the game 34 seconds into the third period. Fugleberg and Santala then assisted on the power-play winner, meaning they factored into all three Finnish goals and each finished the bronze medal game with a goal and an assist. Both recorded six points during the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 35-player medal group includes 15 from the OHL, 13 from the WHL and seven from the QMJHL. Canada\u2019s 22-player roster spans 18 clubs, while the United States\u2019 11 CHL players come from 11 clubs. Finland\u2019s two medallists are London Knights forward Santala and Moncton Wildcats prospect Fugleberg.<\/span><\/p>\n

Across all eight participating countries, 57 CHL players and prospects competed at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, representing 34 of the CHL\u2019s 61 member clubs. The total increased from the 56 originally announced after Saginaw Spirit (OHL) forward <\/span>Sawyer Schmidt<\/span><\/a> joined the United States as an injury replacement for Penticton Vees (WHL) forward <\/span>Brooks DeMars<\/span><\/a>. DeMars appeared in all three preliminary-round games before Schmidt made his tournament debut in Friday\u2019s semifinal victory over Slovakia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the 57 CHL players and prospects who participated, the WHL accounted for 23, the OHL for 22 and the QMJHL for 12. Thirty-one played at least one CHL regular-season game in 2025\u201326, while at least 42 are expected to compete in the CHL in 2026\u201327\u201417 in the WHL, 18 in the OHL and seven in the QMJHL\u2014the largest contingent of any development league represented at the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CHL was also the only development league represented on all eight national teams. Canada led all countries with 22 CHL players, followed by Czechia with 12 and the United States with 11. Slovakia featured four, Germany had three, Finland and Sweden each had two, and Switzerland had one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s gold-medal roster was composed entirely of CHL players\u2014nine from the WHL, eight from the OHL and five from the QMJHL\u2014representing 18 clubs across the CHL\u2019s Member Leagues. Nineteen of the 22 were first-round selections in their respective CHL Member League drafts, including 16 top-10 picks. Captain DuPont and alternate captains Alexis Joseph<\/a> (Saint John Sea Dogs \/ QMJHL) and Schultz were each selected first overall in a CHL Member League draft.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s gold-medal run was also supported by a staff drawn from across the CHL. Twelve members of the team\u2019s management, coaching and support staff represented 12 CHL clubs across all three Member Leagues, including assistant general manager Yanick Lemay (Drummondville Voltigeurs \/ QMJHL) and the entire six-member coaching staff led by Ryan Oulahen (North Bay Battalion \/ OHL). CHL personnel also filled key equipment, athletic therapy and medical roles, extending the league\u2019s contribution to Canada\u2019s victory well beyond its all-CHL playing roster.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eleven CHL players represented the United States over the course of the tournament\u2014six from the OHL, four from the WHL and one from the QMJHL.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tournament offered an early best-on-best showcase for the 2027 NHL Draft class, with 44 of the 57 CHL players and prospects eligible to be selected next June. At the 2026 NHL Draft, 22 of the 51 players selected after competing at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup\u2014or 43 per cent\u2014were CHL-developed. Overall, 106 CHL-developed players were chosen in 2026, more than any development league worldwide, including 16 of the 32 first-round selections.<\/span><\/p>\n
