Underdog Mooseheads surprise another team
2024-09-27
Your Halifax Mooseheads remain perfect in the regular season after an upset win over the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200. The Herd reeled off five straight goals to erase an early 2-0 deficit en route to a 5-2 victory.
The Herd were dynamite on the power play with three tallies on the man advantage in five chances. Defenceman Jack Martin had a big night with one goal and two assists while Antoine Fontaine’s second goal in as many games stood up as the game winner.
Other goal scorers included Cade Moser, Lou Levesque and Shawn Carrier who buried his first as a member of the Mooseheads. Brady Schultz and Liam Kilfoil also notched a pair of assists each while Danny Walters, Owen Phillips, Levesque and Carrier added single helpers. Carrier was named the third star while Cape Breton’s Xavier Daigle got the second star with two assists. Eagles goals came 34 seconds apart in the first period from Lucas Romeo and Callum Aucoin.
Mathis Rousseau outplayed his counterpart Jakub Milota of the Eagles. Rousseau allowed the two early goals in the first period but settled in to stop everything the rest of the way to finish with 24 saves. Milota made 17 saves in his first game back from Nashville Predators camp.
As good as the power play was for Halifax, the penalty kill was even better by killing off all six opportunities for the Eagles.
The victory pushes the Mooseheads’ record to a perfect 3-0 on the young season as they continue to surprise their opponents. The road trip continues on Sunday afternoon at 3pm in Moncton, where they will face their biggest test yet, and the roadie wraps up on Monday afternoon at 2pm in Charlottetown.
Brady Schultz’s two assists moved him into sixth all-time in franchise points by a defenceman with 126 as he surpassed both Ali MacEachern (122) and Andrew Bodnarchuk (124) on the list.
The Home Opener is less than a week away in Moose Country with Halifax set to host the Quebec Remparts next Friday night at 7pm at Scotiabank Centre. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
