2024-09-20
Logan Crosby was the only player to score in an eight-round shootout and the Halifax Mooseheads rallied back for a 2-1 victory over the Islanders to open up the season in Charlottetown.
Mathis Rousseau stopped eight shooters and withstood an onslaught from the Isles in the third period by turning aside 14 shots while Lou Levesque came up with the game-tying goal late in regulation when import rookie Carlos Handel circled the net and fed a pass to the sophomore winger. The assist was Handel’s first career point as the Herd tied the game with 3:29 remaining in the third period. Liam Kilfoil was also later credited with an assist on the goal.
Charlottetown was first to score in the game when defenceman Owen Conrad’s low point shot beat Rousseau after finding its way through traffic 7:49 into the contest.
Final shots were 28-27 in favour of Halifax while both teams went 0-4 on the power play. Charlottetown’s Alexis Michaud was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a blindside hit on Carlos Handel early in the second period.
20-year-old goalie Nicolas Ruccia was named the first star in his Islanders debut with 27 saves. Rousseau earned the second star and Crosby was named the third star.
