Meet Your 2023-24 Halifax Mooseheads
2023-08-31
Your Halifax Mooseheads have announced the final roster for the 2023-24 season. 22 players will represent the team for the 30th anniversary season in Halifax, featuring 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goalies.
15 returning veterans including NHL drafted players Jordan Dumais, Jake Furlong, Mathieu Cataford and Dylan MacKinnon make up a strong group who will be expected to lead the team to contending status again, one year after reaching the QMJHL’s Gilles Courteau Trophy Finals.
The squad will have seven new faces on opening night. Forwards Liam Kilfoil (2nd round pick 2023), Yannik Ponzetto (1st round CHL Import pick 2023), Antoine Fontaine (3rd round pick 2022), Lou Levesque (5th round pick 2022) and Cade Moser (13th round pick 2022) will join defenceman Dominic MacKenzie (7th round pick 2022) and goalie Jack Milner (9th round pick 2021) as rookies on the club.
The Mooseheads will no doubt have one of the strongest defensive corps in the league with six returning veterans playing in front of goalie Mathis Rousseau. Up front, Jordan Dumais enters the year as the reigning QMJHL MVP that saw the Columbus Blue Jackets prospect set a franchise record with 140 points in 2022-23. He is just 25 points shy of Brandon Benedict’s team record of 303 career points. Resident ironman Markus Vidicek has played in 179 consecutive games which is second in franchise history while he set career highs last season with 32 goals, 48 assists and 80 points.
Defenceman David Moravec (Czechia) and forward Yannik Ponzetto (Switzerland) have filled the two import roster positions, while Moravec and forward Brody Fournier will occupy two overage, 20-year-old slots with one overage position remaining open.
*Please note that Liam Welsh will now play for the Truro Bearcats in 2023-24 and remain an affiliate of the Mooseheads.
Forward Ben Wallace, goalie Sam Madgett along with defencemen Eddy Doyle and Jameson George made up the final four cuts from the roster.
The excitement surrounding the 30th anniversary season begins with the Home Opener at Scotiabank Centre on Friday, September 22nd at 7pm when the puck drops versus the Charlottetown Islanders for what will be a memorable night in Moose Country. Individual tickets for all 34 Mooseheads home games will go on sale Monday, September 11th at 11am at HalifaxMooseheads.ca.
