Scholastic Players of the Month | Francesco Lapenna Profile
Francesco (Franky) Lapenna was drafted 57th overall by the Val-d’Or Foreurs in 2018. He was traded to the Charlottetown Islanders via the Drummondville Voltigeurs in December 2021.
Since his arrival in Charlottetown, it was quite evident that the work ethic of this talented goalie was not limited to his skills on the ice. He was equally diligent and focused on his academics. He only has four courses left to complete his Cegep program of studies (DEC) in Business and Commerce and we are quite confident that he will graduate by the end of this hockey season. This is not an easy feat for a Francophone player to do when playing outside of Quebec, but Franky was determined to complete his program of studies in his last year of hockey in the QMJHL by taking summer courses each year.
Some of his academic awards include:
- Received a school bursary from the Montreal Canadiens for his academics in 2018
- Finalist for the QMJHL’s Marcel-Robert Trophy in 2021
- Has been recognized as “Scholastic Player of the Month” on many occasions over his QMJHL hockey career
Franky has been selected as our first “Scholastic Player of the Month” (September) for this 2022-23 hockey season not only for his diligence and academic success in his courses but also because of the attitude he brings to the classroom each and every day. He is a great role model for the younger players and he is very encouraging to his teammates on conveying to them the importance of succeeding academically while playing hockey and helping them with their courses when the opportunity arises.
Franky has a bright future ahead of him. He was invited to the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp in September 2021 and to the Anaheim Ducks camp in September 2022. Given the academic successes he has earned while playing in the QMJHL, I am certain that there will be many opportunities for Franky both on and off the ice.
