Islanders fall in overtime loss in Victoriaville
Victoriaville, QC — The Islanders hit the road for their first true road trip of the year stopping in Victoriaville to kick of their four games in five days.
Donald Hickey once again started in net for the Isles. Number 1 has been between the pipes for all five games this season. Two quick Victoriaville pucks snuck past him to start the game; an uncommon sight for the Newfoundlander.
The Tigres Vincent Boutet found himself in the penalty box, allowing Will Shields to get his second goal of the season just over 10 minutes into the first period making it a 2-1 game. Hickey found himself with a personal error causing the next Tigres goal. The netminder went to pass the puck with his glove hand, leaving the puck on the ice for Egor Shilov to pop it past Hickey. This was some of the fastest pace of play the Islanders had faced all season with tons of pressure from Victoriaville. Charlottetown didn’t let that phase them getting lots of good opportunities around the net and outshooting the Tigres 16-12. The Isles found a way to tie it up before intermission with goals from Nolan Duskocy, and Hudson Armstrong making it his first QMJHL goal.
The speed and intensity continued in the second immediately with a quick goal from Alexey Vlasov to make it 4-3. This period brought the Islanders first fight of the season after a big hit into the number of Antoine Provencher. Anthony Flanagan and Maxime Dodier went head-to-head leaving them both with five minute majors and a game misconduct. KJ Eccleston continued to be impressive in the offensive zone with a killer solo effort breaking through the Tigres defence gaining him a third tick of the season. The Isles outshot the home team 18-6 in the second period.
Third period action would have to be the Islanders best to avoid another overtime game — with an overtime loss and shootout win under their belts already this season. Courtesy of Armstrong, the Islanders took their first lead of the night just under seven minutes into the final 20. Armstrong hit it right over the left shoulder of Andrei Nikolayev. Vlasov continued to be the Tigres biggest asset of the night and put one right back on the board for Victoriaville, collecting his fourth goal of the game and not giving the Islanders any breathing room. Final regulation would end in a tie sending to Isles to overtime once again, but were able to guarantee a point.
Overtime only lasted 2:50 before the Tigres claimed a win 5-4 win on home ice to end the back and forth game.
Charlottetown ended up outshooting the Tigres 41-35.
The Islanders head to Chicoutimi for 2/4 road games this week. Their next home game is October 9th when they host Drummondville for the first time this season.
