Islanders fall in overtime action against the Eagles in Montague
Montague, PE — A first real look at the Islanders’ bench Sunday afternoon as they hosted Cape Breton in a packed Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague.
Returning fan favourite, Donald Hickey, got the start between the pipes for Charlottetown with Sam Berthiaume on the other end for the Eagles.
It was an immediate physical start on the ice with pushing and shoving being the name of the game with three minor penalties and two misconducts being called within the first eight minutes.
Cape Breton got a last minute power player opportunity at the end of the first after Nolan Duskocy went to the box for a check to the head. The Islanders managed to break away any opportunity the Eagles had with a strong penalty kill effort. First 20 minutes ended in goose eggs.
The second period started with a big hit that led to 4 minor penalties only 27 seconds in. And it quickly became the battle of the crossbars with both goalies being saved in back-to-back shot attempts by the extra defender. But the bar couldn’t save Berthiaume from a short handed goal. Duskocy took it end to end with some fancy stick work putting it around the extended net minder to make it 1-0 Islanders. That was short lived with a quick Eagles goal from Jack Broderick less than two minutes later. Cape Breton’s Reece Peitzsche took one from the Islanders handbook, scoring short handed with under four minutes left in the period. Artem Maté snuck in an extra goal to tie things up before the second period buzzer sounded.
The last 20 minutes was even keel with the majority of the period straight back-and-forth hockey. The Isles struggled staying out of the penalty box in the last ten minutes, utilizing their penalty kill to its fullest potential. The Eagles couldn’t capitalize, leaving the third in a 2-2 dead-lock forcing extra minutes.
Overtime didn’t last long. Liam Lefebvre closed the game out with a quick one past Hickey 1:10 into the extra frame finalizing a 3-2 score for the Islanders last preseason game.
The Islanders now turn their focus to their home opener set for September 18th, when they host the Moncton Wildcats. Season Tickets and 15-Game Packs for the 2026-27 season are on sale now. Fans can secure their seats for an exciting new era of Islanders hockey by purchasing online or visiting the Eastlink Centre Box Office.
