But a goal from Derek Andrews, followed by one less than two minutes later by Raoul Boilard, and a late tying goal from captain Lewis Gendron sent the game to overtime. It look just 22 seconds for Maxime Sauthier to find the back of the net for the Eagles- it was his third straight game with a goal in the series.

The Eagles were buoyed by the return to the lineup of Eliot Litalien, who fed Andrews the pass to begin the comeback. He didn’t shy away from the physical play, registering five hits, was +2 and won nine of 11 faceoffs. It was a big night for Eagles goaltender Félix Hamel, who after acting as backup in game four, was back in goal to pick up the win and was able to shake off a slow start, stopping 16 of 17 shots in the final two periods.

It was also the first time in the series the Eagles were able to hold Newfoundland leading point getter Justin Larose off the scoresheet. Newfoundland did get depth contributions, as for the second straight game, a player on the fourth line recorded a two goal game. After Ryan Dwyer scored twice in game four, Benjamin Veitch struck twice in game five.

Here’s what else you need to know ahead of today’s game!

Venue: Mary Brown’s Centre, St. John’s, Newfoundland

Puck drop: 2:30 PM AST

Web coverage: https://www.flohockey.tv/live/246780

Radio Coverage: 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com

Twitter: @cbehockey

Live stats: https://chl.ca/lhjmq-eagles/gamecentre/32496/

CAPE BRETON

NEWFOUNDLAND

6th Eastern Conference, 28-23-4-9 (Away: 14-13-2-3)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD

3rd Eastern Conference, 38-22-3-1 (Home: 21-9-2-0)

3/18

POWER PLAY THIS SERIES

4/18

Raoul Boilard (7 points in 5 games)

SERIES LEADING SCORER

Alexis Michaud (7 points in 5 games)

Félix Hamel (4 games, 87 saves on 99 shots)

SERIES GOALTENDING

Louis-Antoine Denault (5 games, 105 saves on 116 shots)

176

FACEOFFS WON THIS SERIES

138

75

HITS THIS SERIES

80

141

SHOTS THIS SERIES

155

Raoul Boilard (2), Derek Andrews, Lewis Gendron, Maxime Sauthier

GAME FIVE GOAL SCORERS

Benjamin Veitch (2), Dawson Sharkey, Noah Laberge

Will Murphy, Romain Litalien, Rory Pilling

INJURY REPORT (PRIOR GAME)

Kingsley Austin

The Cape Breton Eagles will look to build off of an electrifying comeback and force a game seven, as game six against Newfoundland goes today on Easter Sunday. With the win, the Eagles force a game six with Newfoundland leading the series 3-2.

– Lewis Gendron scored the tying goal with 71 seconds left in regulation, and added two assists for the Eagles, Raoul Boilard scored twice and Derek Andrews also scored for the Eagles while Aiden McCullough added two assists.

– Félix Hamel picked up the win for the Eagles, stopping 24 of 28 shots. Louis-Antoine Denault stopped 38 of 43 in the loss.

The first period belonged to the Regiment, with Benjamin Veitch opening the scoring- it started with Quinn Norman racing his way up the right wing and finding Veitch for the game’s opening goal. Then Dawson Sharkey converted on the power play, receiving a pass from Marek Danicek, kicking it to himself and putting it just under the crossbar from a sharp angle.

Noah Laberge zapped a shot from the right faceoff circle to make it 3-0, and the Regiment had the chance to further open things up when Samuel Kupec was sent off for a minor penalty. But the Eagles killed the first 1:15 off and Justin Larose was sent off. After 45 seconds of four on four, the Eagles went to an abbreviated power play and Boilard found the back of the net to get the home side on the board.

Veitch was the only goal scorer in the second period, winning the puck in the left faceoff circle, cutting through the middle to deke by Hamel to make it 4-1. After a two minute four on four with Sharkey and Reece Peitzsche in the box, the Eagles had a chance to get closer with a late power play that carried over into the third period.

The man advantage couldn’t get the Eagles closer, but there was plenty accomplished at even strength. At 7:28, Derek Andrews converted a feed from behind the net from Eliot Litalien. Boilard’s goal came less than 90 seconds later, inching the Eagles within a goal. With Cape Breton’s Lucas Romeo and Newfoundland’s Emile Perron both off for another two minute four on four, neither team could find the back of the net.

Hamel was lifted for the extra attacker with 2:06 left, and the Eagles pushed hard for the tying goal. With 1:11 left, the breakthrough came as Gendron found the puck in the blue paint and pushed it over the goal line.

A winning goal wasn’t to be had late in regulation, but overtime wouldn’t take long to determine a winner. The first shot of the extra session created a rebound, and Maxime Sauthier, for the third straight game at Centre 200, found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 5-4 win.

The Eagles will look to force game 7 of this series when they take to the ice on Easter Sunday for game 6. His goaltending partner Félix Hamel, who started the first three games of the series, is one of three Eagle players looking to extend their QMJHL careers this evening. With the win, the Regiment take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven first round playoff series.

– Maxime Sauthier & Derek Andrews scored for the Eagles.

– Louis-Antoine Denault stopped 33 of 35 shots in the win, while Félix Hamel stopped 21 of 25 shots in the loss.

– Newfoundland recalled first round draft pick Phenwick MacLean prior to the game. He took warm up but was the last scratch. Dawson Sharkey was also scratched from the Newfoundland lineup, serving the first of a two game suspension for a blindside hit on Eliot Litalien in game two.

The Eagles got the start they were looking for, as the newly formed line of Lucas Romeo with the Europeans Sauthier & Adam Klaus converted early. A Brady Flynn shot created a rebound for Sauthier, who opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game.

Neither team could convert on the power play in the first period- neither the Regiment on back to back man advantages nor the Eagles on their first special teams opportunity. Newfoundland did strike at even strength with 15 seconds remaining in the period. Justin Larose cut to slot, passed to the side and Alexis Michaud snapped the tying goal on a one timer.

A fortunate bounce helped give the Regiment the lead they wouldn’t relinquish at 8:27 of the second period. Hamel came out of the net to to play the puck after a Will Reynolds dump in, but lost his footing as the puck bounced off of a linesman. Benjamin Veitch was there to capitalize and found the empty net to make it a 2-1 game. Later in the period, another bounce went the Regiment’s way when Hamel stretched across to make a save on Danicek, but the puck bounced in the opposite direction and Tyson Goguen was there to get the rebound.

The Eagles pushed back before period’s end. Olivier Laverdière, playing in his first game of the series, won the puck on the right side of the ice and fed it to Andrews streaking through the middle. Denault came up with a big save, but Andrews collected the rebound to put the home team within one.

The one goal game held until the final four minutes of the third period, when Danicek snapped a shot from between the circles by Hamel to put the Regiment up by a pair. The Eagles didn’t waste a lot of time getting an extra attacker out- Hamel was taken out with 3:03 to play. He remained on the bench for the rest of the game, but the Eagles could get no closer and Newfoundland skated to a 4-2 win.

The Eagles will look to tie up the series tomorrow night when they take on the Regiment at Centre 200. It’s also Irish night at the Nest- after a delay, the special green jerseys have arrived and will be worn in game 4! Raffle tickets on the jersey will be sold in support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Puck drop is at 7 PM. Moving Alexis Michaud to the top line proved to be a key to victory for Newfoundland. The 19 year old collected four asists, while his new linemate Justin Larose and third liner Blake Pilgrim-Edwards both scored twice.

It was a costly game for the Eagles as in addition to the loss, forward Eliot Litalien went down with an upper body injury after a blindside hit from Dawson Sharkey.. Litalien will not play tonight for Cape Breton, after having centred the second line with Raoul Boilard & Derek Andrews. Boilard, an excellent faceoff man himself, has been tremendous for the Eagles having registered back to back multi-point games to start the series.

Despite receiving a major penalty for the hit, no supsension for Sharkey was announced prior to Tuesday. But the Regiment may be without star Czech forward Marek Daníček, who appeared to get caught up in the boards after a clean hit by Eagles defesnseman Samuel Kupec in game two. While Daníček did return to the game, he left again and did not play in the third period.

Here’s what else you need to know ahead of tonight’s game!

BUY TICKETS: https://shorturl.at/pr69f

50/50: https://rafflebox.ca/raffle/cbeagles

Venue: Centre 200, Sydney, NS

Puck drop: 7 PM AST

Web coverage: https://www.flohockey.tv

Radio Coverage: 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com

Twitter: @cbehockey

Live stats: https://chl.ca/lhjmq-eagles/gamecentre/32493/

NEWFOUNDLAND

CAPE BRETON

3rd Eastern Conference, 38-22-3-1 (Away: 17-13-1-1)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD

6th Eastern Conference, 28-23-4-9 (Home: 14-10-2-6)

5th, 26% Away: 8th, 22.9%

REGULAR SEASON POWER PLAY

15th, 17.5% Home: T11th, 19.3%

14th, 74.4% Away: T15th, 74.6%

REGULAR SEASON PENALTY KILL

4th, 80.9% Home: 7th, 80.6%

3/9

POWER PLAY THIS SERIES

1/6

Justin Larose & Alexis Michaud (4 points)

SERIES LEADING SCORER

Raoul Boilard (4 points)

Alexis Mathieu (7)

SERIES HIT LEADER

Lucas Romeo (9)

Justin Larose (18)

SERIES SHOT LEADER

Raoul Boilard & Lewis Gendron (7)

Louis-Antoine Denault (47 saves on 52 shots)

GOALTENDING

Félix Hamel (63 saves on 71 shots)

Kingsley Austin

INJURY REPORT (PRIOR GAME)

Will Murphy, Romain Litalien

After earning a split in the first two games in Newfoundland, the Cape Breton Eagles look to close out the month of March by retaking the lead in the best of seven opening round playoff series against the Regiment. Sharkey was given a game misconduct and Litalien did not return to action.

– Louis-Antoine Denault stoppped 20 of 22 shots in the win, while Félix Hamel stopped 31 of 37 shots in the loss.

The Eagles were able to kill off an early penalty but it was not that long after before the Regiment opened the scoring, with Pilgrim-Edwards dangling around Hamel. The period finished 1-0 for the home side.

A late penalty to Samuel Kupec carried over to the second period and Sharkey took advantage, wiring a shot into the top corner over Hamel. Less than three minutes later, Larose would put the puck in a simliar spot and it was a 3-0 lead for the Regiment.

Peitzsche broke the ice for the Eagles with Benjamin Veitch in the box serving the Sharkey penalty. While Newfoundland was able to kill the final three minutes of the penalty, Boilard closed the gap as he surged up the right wing, cut to the middle to beat Denault and make it 3-2.

While the Eagles may have had momentum heading into the third period, it was the Regiment who scored next as Pilgrim-Edwards cashed in on a rebound after a Ryan Dwyer shot. The final five minutes belonged to the home side, with Larose scoring his second of the night on the power play and then Louis-François Bélanger finishing the scoring.

The Eagles will look to re-take in the lead in the series when game 3 goes Tuesday night at Centre 200.

Puck drop is at 7 PM. It was a key moment for the Eagles to receive depth scoring, as Kelly played on the “fourth” line in a game that saw the Eagles dress 11 forwards and defenseman. William Dube, recalled on the Eagles blueline, saw limited power play time in the first period. Raoul Boilard continued his hot form from the regular season- after scoring in three of his final four regular season games, he collected a goal and an assist in the opener.

While Newfoundland leading scorer Justin Larose did light the lamp, the Eagles were able to contain the Regiment captain who registered ten shots on goal- albeit maybe from the outside. Newfoundland’s biggest opportunity to tie the game came with consecutive power plays, but the Eagles penalty kill stood tall. Both teams would be to receive the quality of goaltending they had in game on, which a 3-2 score being low scoring for a game that saw a combined 64 shots.

Here’s what else you need to know ahead of tonight’s game!

Venue: Mary Brown’s Centre, St. John’s, Newfoundland

Puck drop: 6:30 PM AST

Web coverage: https://www.flohockey.tv/live/246786

Radio Coverage: 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com

Twitter: @cbehockey

Live stats: https://chl.ca/lhjmq-eagles/gamecentre/32492/

CAPE BRETON

NEWFOUNDLAND

6th Eastern Conference, 28-23-4-9 (Away: 14-13-2-3)

REGULAR SEASON RECORD

3rd Eastern Conference, 38-22-3-1 (Home: 21-9-2-0 )

Lewis Gendron, Raoul Boilard, Caden Kelly

GAME ONE GOAL SCORERS

Justin Larose, Maddex Marmulak

0/3

GAME ONE POWER PLAY

1/5

Will Murphy, Romain Litalien

INJURY REPORT (PRIOR GAME)

Kingsley Austin

Félix Hamel (32 saves on 34 shots)

GAME ONE GOALTENDING

Louis-Antoine Denault (27 saves on 30 shots)

Lucas Romeo (5)

GAME ONE HITS (INDIVIDUAL)

Alexis Mathieu (6)

14

GAME ONE HITS (TEAM)

9

34

GAME ONE FACOFFS (INDIVIDUAL)

27

Lewis Gendron (16/29)

GAME ONE FACEOFFS (TEAM)

Tyson Goguen (10/16)

The Cape Breton Eagles look to take a 2-0 lead back home to Centre 200 as their first round series continues tonight against the Newfoundland Regiment. Louis-Antoine Denault stopped 27 of 30 shots in the loss.

It was the captains leading the way for their two teams in the opening period. The first Newfoundland power play was immediately followed by another as penalties to Samuel Kupec & Brady Flynn created a 25 second five on three. The Eagles killed off the first minor, but Larose found the back of the net at five on four.

The Eagles would then draw back to back penalties with no overlap, and couldn’t score on either- however the second penalty had just elapsed when Noah Jettelson found Gendron at the side of the net to tie the game.

The second period was played almost entirely at even strength, with the exception of each team having a 23 second power play on the opposite ends of a lengthy four on four. It was at five on five both teams scored- first it was Maddex Marmulak, trickling it through Hamel from the side of the net. Boilard countered, finishing a pass in front of the net to make it 2-2.

The Kelly breakthrough came at the 10:52 mark, as he beat Alexis Mathieu along the boards and lifted it over Denault to give the Eagles the first lead of the game. But less than two minutes later, the Eagles penalty kill was put to the test after Lucas Romeo was sent off for holding.

Newfoundland’s best chances came at the end of the power play, ending in a frantic sequence with the net dislodged. A wild scrum saw both teams receive penalties, with the extra going to the Eagles, sending Newfoundland back to the power play.

The Eagles penalty kill held strong- and the Eagles again were outnumbered as Newfoundland lifted Denault for an extra attacker. But there were no tying goal to be had and the Eagles skated to a game one victory.

Game two of this series goes tomorrow night. Puck drop is at 6:30 PM AST .
