When a young man becomes a member of the Cape Breton Eagles, he does not live on his own. Each player is placed with a family from the community and spends the entire hockey season with them. Billet families are called upon to provide more than simply a bed to sleep in- they are providing a home away from home.
There are benefits that come along with billeting a member of the Cape Breton Eagles. These perks however, do not equal the overwhelming joy a family receives from opening their hearts and homes to a young man trying to achieve his dream of playing in the NHL.
Potential billets must go through an in-house interview process and complete consent forms for criminal record information. At such times, the current billet coordinator will inspect the home and the player’s room. Billet families are considered the Eagles “Off-Ice” team and without them we are simply not successful.
Billet family responsibilities:
- Dedicated room: Double bed or larger, and a student desk.
- Family type meals
- Laundry- TBD between player and billet
- Having the player feel at home and part of the family.
