Four Eagles’ Players Heading To NHL Camps
The Cape Breton Eagles are excited to announce that four players have been invited by NHL clubs to participate in training camp events. Cam Squires (New Jersey Devils), Brayden Schmitt (Colorado Avalanche), Cole Burbidge (Ottawa Senators), and Cam MacDonald (Arizona Coyotes) will represent the Eagles starting this week.
Cam Squires – Forward – New Jersey Devils
Squires (Charlottetown, PE) was selected in the 4th round, 122nd overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Squires is entering his third season with the Eagles, after a breakout campaign in 2022-23, where he registered 30 goals, and 34 assists for 64 points in 67 games played. In his Eagles career thus far, Squires has amassed 98 points (46 goals, 52 assists), while also winning the QMJHL’s Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2022-23.
Brayden Schmitt – Defenceman – Colorado Avalanche
Schmitt, a defenceman from Truro, NS, came to the Eagles in December 2022 from the Blanville-Boisbriand Armada. The 19-year-old went on to score 1 goal and added 19 assists, for 20 points in 36 games played for the Eagles last season. In total, Schmitt had 4 goals and 28 assists in 69 regular season games played. Entering his 5th season in the QMJHL, Schmitt is a veteran of 160 games played to go along with 59 points. Schmitt was also invited to Colorado’s camp in 2022.
Cole Burbidge – Forward – Ottawa Senators
Cole Burbidge was an Eagles off-season acquisition in the summer of 2023 from the Sain John Sea Dogs. The 18-year-old Burbidge scored 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points in 68 games played as a 17-year-old rookie in 2022-23.
Cam MacDonald – Forward – Arizona Coyotes
MacDonald, a 20-year-old forward, was originally a 5th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning and is a veteran of 155 games played in the QMJHL. Entering his 5th season in the Q, MacDonald scored 29 goals and added 27 assists in 58 games played split between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Gatineau Olympiques in 2022-23. For his career, the Hammonds Plains, NS-native has scored 54 goals and 53 assists in those 155 games played.
