Eagles Fall To Charlottetown On Backend Of Home & Home
NOTES FROM THE GAME
– A four goal third period, including two empty net markers, gave the Charlottetown Islanders a 4-1 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles on Friday night in Charlottetown. Antoine Provencher’s goal at 13:56 stood up as the winning goal.
– Noah Jettelson’s power play goal in the opening period was the lone tally for the Eagles.
– Donald Hickey stopped 28 of 29 shots for the Islanders in the win. Lucas Beckman stopped 21 of 23 shots in the loss.
– It was Beckman’s Eagle debut, along with forward Liam Lefebvre, both returning from NHL camps. Lefebvre registered three shots on goal and five hits.
– After a video review, Eagles forward Reece Peitzche was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for kneeing at the 14:33 mark of the second period.
The first two power plays of the game went to the Eagles. While Charlottetown killed off a Will Shields penalty, five seconds into a penalty to Matthew Butler, Jettlelson opened the scoring with a shot from the blueline. Charlottetown would have two power plays in the opening period, the second one which would carry into the next period, but couldn’t equalize on either.
The Eagles outshot the Islanders 15-4 in the second stanza, but penalties were the story of the period. After the five minute mark, Cape Breton’s Drew Murphy & Charlottetown’s Cameron Holyoke were each given ten minute misconducts.
Peitzsche’s infraction cause a substantial scrum- Provencher, Anthony Flanagan, Will Shields, and Owen Conrad were all given penalties for roughing, along with Jettelson, Lefebvre, and Alonso Gosselin for the Eagles. The teams played two minutes of four on four prior before the Islanders major power play commenced.
It lasted just nine seconds as Eagles defenseman Jacob De Ladurantaye drew a holding penalty on Ryan Jewer, setting up another four on four sequence. Neither team could score with the open ice, nor could Charlottetown on the balance of the power play, and the period finished 1-0 Eagles.
The final stanza belonged to the home team. In the opening two minutes, Matthew Butler found his rebound to put through Beckman to tie the game. Provencher’s goal finished a three way passing play:after Conrad slid the puck to Antoine Boudreau, Boudreau found Provencher who dug the puck out of his feet and put it over Beckman.
With 2:52 remaining, the Eagles elected to lift Beckman for an extra attacker, putting five forwards on the ice for the ensuing faceoff. The move didn’t pay off as after missing an open net, Boudreau cashed in on the rebound off the end boards. Beckman would make his way to the bench again in the final minutes, and Nolan Duskocy would seal the Charlottetown victory with 32 seconds to play.
The Eagles are next in action tomorrow afternoon as they visit #7 team in the CHL, the Saint John Sea Dogs, featuring potential NHL first round draft picks Alexis Joseph & Jamie Glance.
