The adventure ends in Rouyn-Noranda
ROUYN-NORANDA, Que. – The 2015-16 season came to a close for the Shawinigan Cataractes on Wednesday evening at the Iamgold Arena. After falling behind 3-1 in the series they managed to force a game five but the league’s top ranked team from the regular season was too much for the Cataractes to handle. An offensive explosion by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies sunk the Cataractes in game five to capture their first Presidents Cup title.
For the Cataractes, Matthew Klebanskyj re-entered the lineup for Claude Bouchard after missing the last two games. This was the only change made by the visitors. Philippe Cadorette was in goal for Shawinigan.
Jean-Christophe Beaudin was out of the Huskies lineup. Chase Marchand was back in goal for the Huskies after being removed from the game Tuesday night in Shawinigan.
Goals in the first period from Greer, Meier, Dzierkals, and Myers got the Huskies off to a hot start. Charles Taillon respond in between those tallies as the score was 4-1 after the first period for the home side.
Alexandre Fortin and Mathieu Boucher knotched a goal each in the latter half of the middle frame to extend the advantage to 6-1 through 40 minutes of play.
An early third period goal by Dennis Yan gave the Cataractes a small glimmer of hope as Brandong Gignac got the lone helper on a man advantage. However, Dzierkals potted his second of the game to put the icing on the cake. The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies won the first Presidents Cup title in the teams’ history with a 4-1 series victory. They will now represent the QMJHL at the Mastercard Memorial Cup in Red Deer, Alberta.
