Shawinigan falls to Rimouski, Charlottetown… and overcomes Halifax!
Alexis Lafrenière and the Océanic prevail
Fans in Shawinigan were starving for a winning streak. Unfortunately, opposing teams had something else in mind. It was the case on last Saturday night as Rimouski was in town. Finishing the game with 21 shots on net, the Cataractes lost 6-4 to Alexis Lafrenière and the Oceanic. The young superstar had 2 goals and 2 assists and was the offensive leader for Rimouski.
On Shawinigan’s side, both Vasily Glotov and Samuel Asselin came out with a pair of goals. Up to the second half of the third period, Daniel Renaud’s players were competing hard and were on the verge of taking the lead. Sadly, a mid-period goal cut down Shawinigan’s hopes to win the game.
For Gabriel Sylvestre, it was a night to remember since he recorded 3 assists. Also, fans were pleased to see young prospect Jérémy Martin earn his first point in the Q when he assisted Samuel Asselin’s goal late in the third period.
Charlottetown in control, Shawinigan lose 4-1
The first goal of the game came when Cameron Askew, who was serving a penalty, came out of the box, going straight to the net on the breakaway and scored nicely with a right-left move before letting the puck slide between Matthew Welsh’s pads.
Unfortunately for the local favorites, it was the only moment of joy since Charlottetown answered with 4 goals and 36 shots on net. The Cataractes managed to take 35 shots on net but Welsh hold the fort and got the win.
Denisov too strong for the Mooseheads
People around the league thought that Shawinigan would be an easy win for the Mooseheads on wednesday night. Shawinigan had other things in mind. Daniel Renaud’s group showed a lot of grit and intensity and came out on top with a 3-2 shootout win.
The first two goals of the game were score by the Cataractes as Simon Benoit, on the powerplay, and Jérémy Martin, his first in the Q. The youngster took control of the puck at his own blue line, skated down the left wing line and placed a laser just over Alexis Gravel’s shoulder. After the game, the rookie told reporters that he was speechless, that it was an incredible sensation for him.
Before the end of the second period, Halifax scored twice. Filip Zadina and Arnaud Durandeau, the first during a penalty kill and the second a minute and a half later.
Both teams had great chances during the third period but Mikhail Denisov was the one having the biggest impact in the game. Just before the end of overtime, Denisov closed the door once again with a magnificent glove save.
The only player to score during the shootout was Jan Drozg who gave all 3800 fans a great look at his talent with a beautiful left-right move before sliding the puck under Gravel’s pad. A few seconds later, Denisov shut the door to confirm Shawinigan’s win.
