Cataractes’ Commemorative Jersey Auction

Shawinigan, QC –The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Shawinigan Cataractes today announced that the specially designed commemorative jerseys worn by the Cataractes in the opening game of the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup against the Edmonton Oil Kings are available for online auction until Friday June 1 at 10:00 pm at http://auction.chl.ca.
The opening game jerseys were designed by the Canadian Hockey League in conjunction with the Shawinigan Cataractes in honour of the 62nd Field Artillery Regiment. The 62nd Field Artillery Regiment is is a militia unit of the Canadian Army that is located in Shawinigan, Quebec. It recruits primarily in Shawinigan, Joliette and Victoriaville. Its oldest and most notable subunit is the 81st Field Artillery Battery, which was founded in the Eastern Townships in 1912 and relocated in Shawinigan, Mauricie in 1936. The “S” shoulder patch is a homage to the 1945-46 Shawinigan Junior Team that had numerous war veterans playing for them.
Proceeds from the auction will go towards the Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. Poppy funds are spent to support veterans and their families, buy hospital equipment, support cadet groups, and provide student bursaries. The MasterCard Memorial Cup Theme Jersey Program was created in 2008 and have cumulatively generated over $100,000 for the fund.
The Memorial Cup was donated in 1919 by the Ontario Hockey Association as a memorial to those young men and women who had been given their lives in the defence of Canada during World War I. The 2012 edition of the tournament in Shawinigan marks the 94th time this prestigious trophy will be presented.
