By the Numbers Breakdown of the CHL at Summer U18 Selection Camp
Forty-four players from across the country including 41 Canadian Hockey League talents are ready to compete for a spot on Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team July 26-30 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
The Selection Camp, which includes practices and a trio of intrasquad games, will determine the group of 22 to best represent Canada at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia, between August 5-10.
Here’s a closer look at the Selection Camp roster, by the numbers, followed by a full rundown of all invited players listed by their CHL team.
1 – Draft position associated with Kaiden Guhle (WHL, Prince Albert ’17), Quinton Byfield (OHL, Sudbury ’18), and Hendrix Lapierre (QMJHL, Chicoutimi ’18) each chosen first overall in their respective leagues.
2 – Players represented Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in April including Jamie Drysdale and Daemon Hunt.
3 – Players from both the Prince Albert Raiders and the Saint John Sea Dogs to lead all CHL clubs.
4 – CHL goaltenders competing for a spot on Team Canada.
5 – CHL teams represented at camp by two players includes the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, Moose Jaw Warriors, Oshawa Generals, Saginaw Spirit, and Windsor Spitfires.
8 – Provinces represented by CHL player hometowns are Ontario (15), Alberta (9), Quebec (7), British Columbia (3), Manitoba (3), New Brunswick (1), Prince Edward Island (1), Saskatchewan (1), plus one American state.
9 – QMJHL players invited to camp.
14 – CHL defencemen competing for a spot on Team Canada.
16 – OHL players invited to camp.
16 – WHL players invited to camp.
22 – Gold medals for Canada in 28 years of Summer Under-18 competition.
23 – CHL forwards competing for a spot on Team Canada.
31 – First round picks by CHL clubs including an impressive 14 selected in the Top-5.
32 – CHL teams represented by players invited to camp.
38 – CHL players eligible for the 2020 NHL Draft leaving just three (Korczak, Lennox, Vrbetic) eligible in 2021.
