About yesterday:
In Group B, Finland got into the win column for the first time at the tournament after a 4-1 victory over Sweden. Former London Knights d-man Olli Maatta (UTA) tallied an assist in the win.
Slovakia remained perfect in Group B after they edged out a 3-2 decision over Italy. Former Sarnia Sting and Sudbury Wolves forward Adam Ruzicka scored in his second straight game while former Wolves standout Dalibor Dvorsky (STL) tallied an assist. Ex Kitchener Ranger Adam Liska, Baie Comeau Drakkar Lukas Cingel and Edmonton Oil Kings’ Martin Gernat also all registered helpers. Medicine Hat Tigers and Regina Pats alumnus Matt Bradley scored again for Italy in defeat.
Charlottetown Islanders alumnus Filip Chlapik scored his first as Czechia took down France 6-3 in Group A. Filip Hronek, who previously played for the Saginaw Spirit, had a pair of assists as did former Kitchener Ranger and Sudbury Wolves forward Radek Faksa (DAL).
Finally, Canada moved to 2-0-0 in Group A after a 5-1 decision over Switzerland. Former CHL stars in the Halifax Mooseheads’ Nathan MacKinnon (COL) and Erie Otters’ Connor McDavid (EDM) each had three points (1G/2A) in the win. Day 4 schedule (Feb. 14)
Slovakia vs. Sweden – 6:10 am ET / 3:10am PT
Latvia vs. Germany – 6:10 am ET / 3:10am PT
Italy vs. Finland —10:40am ET / 7:40am PT
USA vs. Denmark – 3:10pm ET / 12:10pm PT
The day ahead:
A win for Slovakia over Sweden will guarantee them an automatic berth in the quarterfinals and complete a perfect 3-0-0 round robin after they already registered wins against Finland and Italy. On the other hand, a victory for Sweden – who have beat Italy but fell to Finland – will see them earn the head-to-head tiebreaker over Slovakia, something that could be vital based on final positioning in Group B.
Germany will seek its second straight victory of the tournament when they tackle Latvia in Group C action. Germany defeated Denmark 3-1 in its tournament opener while Latvia – who fell 5-1 to the USA in their first game – will look to get into the win column.
Back in Group B, Finland, fresh off a win over Sweden Friday, will look to record its second win of the tournament when they face hosts Italy. If Finland win, coupled with Sweden beating Slovakia, it would create a three-way tie atop the group with points obtained in head-to-head games between the teams concerned the first tiebreaker for top spot. As for hosts Italy, they have suffered two narrow defeats to Sweden (5-2) and Slovakia (3-2) respectively.
Finally, the USA will look for its second win of the tournament. The Americans beat Latvia 5-1 in their opener while Denmark – who lost to Germany in their first game – are after their first victory in Group C.
