2026 Winter Olympics Daily: Feb. 13
Canada got its 2026 Olympic campaign underway in emphatic fashion on Day 2 of the Games from Milano Cortina.

About yesterday:
Former Halifax Mooseheads and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies star Timo Meier (NJ) had a pair of goals as Switzerland opened its campaign with a 4-0 victory over France. The Huskies’ Sven Andrighetto as well as the Quebec Remparts’ Philipp Kurashev (SJ) each tallied an assist as did former Kamloops Blazer Michael Flora.
Canada stormed to a convincing 5-0 win over Czechia in their opener as former Owen Sound Attack goaltender Jordan Binnington (STL) turned away all 26 shots he faced. Goals from alumni in the Brandon Wheat Kings’ Mark Stone (VGK), London Knights’ Bo Horvat, Halifax Mooseheads’ Nathan MacKinnon (COL) and Owen Sound Attack and Guelph Storm Nick Suzuki (MTL) paced the offence while the Erie Otters’ Connor McDavid (EDM) added three assists.

The USA collected its first win of the tournament after a 5-1 victory versus Latvia in their opener. The London Knights’ Matthew Tkachuk (FLA) had a pair of assists while former Saginaw Spirit and Plymouth Whalers forward Vincent Trocheck (NYR) also had a helper. In defeat, Oshawa Generals alumnus Renars Krastenbergs had Latvia’s lone goal.
Finally, former Prince Albert Raiders and Kelowna Rockets star Leon Draisaitl (EDM) had a goal and an assist while OHL alumnus Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 shots in a 3-1 win over Denmark. The Halifax Mooseheads’ Nikolej Ehlers (CAR) had an assist in defeat.

The day ahead:
In Group B action, Finland will look for its first win of the tournament when they face their Scandinavian rivals Sweden. The Finns dropped a 4-1 decision to Slovakia in the first game of the tournament and must win today to remain in mathematical contention for an automatic berth to the quarterfinals. Sweden had to grind out a 5-2 win over hosts Italy in its opener Wednesday but a win tonight will put them in a strong position to finish atop the group.
In the other Group B contest, a win for Slovakia will set-up a potential winner take-all situation with Sweden if they too are victorious to decide the group victors. As for Italy, they’ll look for their first win of the competition where they will be buoyed by their effort in a narrow loss to Sweden.
After defeat to Canada Thursday, Czechia will look to get into the win column when they battle France. The French also seek a first victory after they were blanked 4-0 by Switzerland yesterday.
Finally, Canada and Switzerland will look to move into pole position in Group A. Both teams recorded shutout wins Thursday; Canada 5-0 over Czechia while the Swiss blanked France 4-0. A victory for either team will all but assure a path immediately to the quarterfinals.
