Voltigeurs Edge Spitfires with 3-2 Overtime Win
Rimouski, QC – Drummondville Voltigeurs’ forward Maxime Frenette buried a rebound past Windsor Spitfires’ goaltender Andrew Engelage at 8:56 of the extra frame to give the QMJHL Champions a 3-2 overtime win in the team’s first game at the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Rimouski.

The goal sent the 4,559 fans at the Colisee into a frenzy as the Voltigeurs’ flooded the ice to celebrate the win. Frenette was named first star of the game for his goal with assists credited to Patrik Prokop and Philippe Lefebvre.

The teams battled hard and traded goals throughout the contest. The teams played a scoreless first period and exchanged several big hits. The second period looked like it would end without any goals until the Spitfires moved the puck hard up the ice and fired a shot on goal with the rebound bouncing out to Adam Henrique, who slid the puck across the line on the power play with 0.2 seconds left on the clock to break the scoreless drought.

Gabriel Dumont, the game’s third star, got Drummondville on the board at 7:59 of the third period to tie the game. The game would not stay tied for long as second star of the game Henrique netted his second goal of the game in close to the goal at 11:48 of the third. The Voltigeurs were relentless with their attack and tied the game again, this time off the stick of Philippe Lefebvre who wristed a low show past Engelage at 14:07 of the third period.

Engelage made 30 saves despite the loss while Marco Cousineau stopped 33 shots in the win.

The Spitfires (0-1) take to the ice again Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm against the host Rimouski Oceanic (0-1) in a game that can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet and RDS. Drummondville (1-0) will play the Kelowna Rockets (1-0) Monday night at 7:30 pm.
