Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that rookie forward Matt Puempel of the Peterborough Petes is the CHL Player of the Week to close out the regular season for the week ending March 14. Puempel is the second straight Pete to claim this award recording eight points in two games with four goals and four assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-3.

Puempel put together the best game of his young career Saturday night with an incredible six-point performance scoring a hat-trick and adding three assists in a 10-3 win over the Oshawa Generals. He collected his 33rd goal of the season and was named first star of the game while becoming the youngest player in Petes’ history to score 33 goals in a season. Earlier in the week, Puempel scored a goal and an assist as part of a 4-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves.

Puempel, a 17-year-old from Essex, ON, led all OHL rookies in scoring with 33 goals and 31 assists for 64 points in 59 games. He was also named the OHL’s Rookie of the Month for January and February and helped push the Petes into sixth place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference Standings.

David Gilbert of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan received consideration for the award scoring five goals and two assists for seven points in three games highlighted by a hat-trick performance Friday night in a 6-4 win over the Halifax Mooseheads. Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings was also considered after scoring five goals and six assists for 11 points in three games with his top performance played last Wednesday with two goals and three assists in an 8-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.
