OHL All-Time Goal Scoring Leader John Tavares named Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that John Tavares of the London Knights is the Boston Pizza CHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 8. Tavares scored 10 points including six goals and four assists in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-2.

Tavares became the OHL’s new all-time leading goal scorer with three goals on Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 win against the Windsor Spitfires. He also added an assist in the contest and was named first star of the game. Tavares opened the scoring early in the first period with career goal number 213 in career game number 246 which tied the previous record established by Peter Lee of the Ottawa 67’s who scored 213 goals in 280 games from the 1971-72 season through 1975-76. His record-setting goal came midway through the third period. By completing his third hat-trick of the season with the game-winning goal, Tavares has 58 goals on the year and 215 in his career and continues to build his record. Tavares began the week with two consecutive three-point games beginning Thursday night at home to the Kitchener Rangers. He scored two power play goals with one assist in the 7-1 win for the Knights. On Friday night in Kitchener he would score a goal and two assists in a 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Tavares, an 18-year-old from Oakville, ON is in his fourth OHL season and currently leads the league in scoring with 58 goals and 46 assists for 104 points in 55 games. The Team Canada gold medalist and 2009 World Junior Most Valuable Player is eligible for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Kevin Veilleux of the Rimouski Oceanic is the QMJHL’s nominee for the award after scoring three goals and six assists for nine points in three games. He was consistent all week recording three three-point games and earning first, second, and third star of the game honours. Colin Long of the Kelowna Rockets is the WHL nominee for scoring one goal and six assists in three games highlighted by a one goal and three assist performance as second star in a 4-1 win Wednesday against the Spokane Chiefs.
