Howden, Fitzpatrick lead Canada over Czech Republic at WU18

GRAND FORKS, ND – Late first period goals from Brett Howden (Moose Jaw Warriors) and David Quenneville (Medicine Hat Tigers) put Canada ahead 2-0 before goaltender Evan Fitzpatrick (Sherbrooke Phoenix) completed a stellar 38-save performance in a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic at the 2016 World Under-18 Hockey Championship.
Howden, who was added to Canada’s roster along with defenceman Connor Hall (Kitchener Rangers) on Saturday, would record his second of the game 5:17 into the second period with Mason Shaw (Medicine Hat Tigers) drawing his second assist of the game.
Fitzpatrick was at his best in the second frame, turning aside all 22 Czech Republic shots he faced before Filip Zadina broke the shutout on the powerplay 2:35 into the third period.
Canada was outshot 39-28 in the victory, improving to 2-0 headed into a Monday matchup with Slovakia that can be seen live on TSN at 8:30pm ET.
