Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that forward Craig Cunningham of the Vancouver Giants is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 4. In two playoff games Cunningham scored three goals and three assists for six points with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.
Cunningham began his week scoring a goal and two assists in a 9-6 win over the Portland Winterhawks in Game one of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Semi-Finals on Saturday. One day later he led his club to a 7-4 victory to extend the Giants series lead to 2-0 over the Winterhawks and was named first star of the contest with two goals and one assist.
Cunningham, a 19-year-old from Trail, BC, is playing in his fourth WHL season with the Giants. He was recently named a first team WHL All-Star after recording 97 points in 72 regular season games and currently leads the league in playoff scoring with 16 points in six games.
Also considered for the award was Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires who led the OHL in scoring with six points in two games including one goal and five assists. The Spitfires currently lead their second round playoff series 3-0 over the Plymouth Whalers. In the QMJHL, Gabriel Dumont scored five points including three goals and two assists for the Drummondville Voltigeurs who currently lead the Rimouski Oceanic 2-0 in their second round series.
