Frontenacs’ Matt Mahalak named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Matt Mahalak of the Kingston Frontenacs is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending December 1 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 0.50 and save percentage of .982.
Mahalak allowed just one goal on 57 shots last week helping the Frontenacs win twice to build their winning-streak to four games while climbing to second place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference with 33 points. On Friday night Mahalak earned first star honours recording his second shutout of the season making 27 saves as part of the 3-0 win over the Peterborough Petes. On Sunday night he earned third star honours backstopping the Frontenacs to a 2-1 win over the first place Oshawa Generals making 29 saves including a penalty shot stop in the first period before kicking aside 12 shots in the third period to preserve the victory.
Mahalak, a 20-year-old from Monroe, Michigan, is playing in his fourth OHL season and first with the Frontenacs following three seasons with the Plymouth Whalers. A sixth round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2011 NHL Draft, Mahalak has an 11-8-1-1 record this season with a goals-against-average of 3.18 and save percentage of .905.
Also considered for the award this week was Domenic Graham of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens with a 2-0-0-0 record posting a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .950, and Ottawa Senators prospect Chris Driedger of the Calgary Hitmen who also went 2-0-0-0 earning a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .974.
