Canada opens U18 Ivan Hlinka with 5-1 win over Switzerland

PIESTANY, Slovakia – Mathew Barzal (Seattle Thunderbirds) had a goal and an assist to lead Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team to a 5-1 win over Swtizerland in Monday’s opening game at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.
Canada’s other goals were scored by Dylan Strome (Erie Otters), Lawson Crouse (Kingston Frontenacs), Mitchell Vande Sompel (Oshawa Generals), and Mitchell Stephens (Saginaw Spirit).
Zach Sawchenko (Moose Jaw Warriors) made 20 saves in goal for the win.
The Canadians continue round-robin play on Tuesday morning against Sweden.
Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team includes 22 players from the Canadian Hockey League including eight players from the Ontario Hockey League, eight from the Western Hockey League, and six from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League competing at the 2014 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, Aug. 11-16 in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia.
