99 Canadian Hockey League Players Selected at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft
Montreal, QC – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 99 players out of a total of 210 (47%) were selected throughout the seven rounds of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft which concluded Saturday afternoon at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
The Ontario Hockey League led the way with 45 players selected, followed by the Western Hockey League with 31, and 23 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes produced six players selected in the draft to lead the CHL, followed by five players from both the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and the Guelph Storm. The Red Deer Rebels led the WHL with four players selected.
At least one CHL player appeared on every NHL team draft list with the Los Angeles Kings selecting a league-leading nine out of their 10 players from the CHL.
Canada was the number one country represented at the draft producing 102 players followed by 55 from the United States.
The CHL continues to be the number one development league in the world and the leading provider of talent to the NHL.
Last season, 20 CHL players were taken in the first round of the draft on Friday and 110 were selected during the entire 2008 NHL Entry Draft process. The OHL led the way with 46 players while 37 players were selected from the WHL and 27 players were selected from the QMJHL.
