21 CHL Graduates Win Bronze with Canada at 2017 FISU Winter Universiade
21 CHL graduates helped Team Canada capture its 15th medal in 16 FISU tournament appearances, defeating the Czech Republic 4-3 to claim Bronze on Wednesday in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Less then 24 hours after a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Russia in the semi-final round, the OUA All-Stars rebounded to edge the Czechs on goals from Pierre-Olivier Morin, Tommy Giroux, Guillaume Asselin and Brett Welychka.
Head coach Brett Gibson (Queen’s) made a goaltending change midway through the second period as the Czech Republic drew within a goal down 4-3. Sebastien Auger made 16 saves in relief to secure the win for Canada.
Canada finished the tournament with a record of 5-1, being led in scoring by Michael McNamee who finished with three goals, eight assists and 11 points in six games. Other notable performances included Pierre-Olivier Morin (6 GP, 6-3–9), Brett Welychka (6 GP, 5-3–8) and defenceman Martin Lefebvre (6 GP, 2-6–8).
Since 1997, Canada has been represented at the biennial Universiade men’s hockey tournament by each of the three U SPORTS conferences on a rotating basis.
