21 CHL graduates have won bronze after representing Canada in the 2015 Winter Universiade Games in Granada, Spain. Canada defeated the Czech Republic 6-2 on February 14 to claim bronze behind silver medalists in Kazakhstan and gold medalists from Russia.
Chris Collins and Kevin King both contributed two goals and an assist in Canada’s bronze medal win while goaltender Kris Lazaruk made 32 saves to secure the victory.
Collins, King, Kruise Reddick and Levko Koper each finished the tournament with eight points through six games played to lead Team Canada in scoring. Collins, King and Reddick also potted five goals apiece.
Ryan Holfeld was sensational in the tournament as he picked up two shutouts and led all goalies with a 0.40 goals-against average and a .972 save percentage.
There were four former members of both the Edmonton Oil Kings and Kootenay Ice on Team Canada’s roster. In total, 21 of the 23 members on the team played in the WHL. The Alberta Golden Bears had six WHL graduates on the team including T.J. Foster and Jordan Hickmott who both were named WHL Grads of the Month this season.
The Universiade Games is a biennial tournament and the players chosen for the ice hockey team rotate through the three conferences in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS): Canada West Universities Athletics Association, Ontario University Athletics and Atlantic University Sport. The all-star team was represented by the Canada West Conference this year.
